Hi, iam looking at upgrading my 2008 Mac pro's video card, BUT dont want to turn my baby into a wind tunnel.. I am not /that/ partial to playing games, but once in a while that would be nice to crank up SC2 or something similar..

So Ive you have upgraded your video card in your mac pro, pls post on a scale of 1(1 being silent) to 10 (10 being really annoyingly loud) the sound level.

Cards interested in (if you would like to add more cards, pls do so) Also please mention what you upgraded the video card from. ie GT120 to 4870

Ati:

4870
5870
5770

Nvidia

GTX 260
GTX 265
GTX 285

any info would be much appreciated as i want more performance for my mac pro, but i don't want a wind tunnel.

cheers

I own the HD4870 (1GB) in my 2006 Mac Pro. Noise levels aren't too high but they are noticable. I'd give the HD4870 = 6/10.

Protip for this card: Using Windows? Use MSI Afterburner to automatically control the fan speed. This card runs very hot and the CCC runs the fan on maximum speed when it gets to 100C. The CCC's automatic fan control is either downright broken or really bad (possibly both).

I used to have a 4870, which I upgraded to the 5870. The 5870 is significantly quieter than the 4870. I'd agree with the previous poster that the 4870 is about a 6, and I'd give the 5870 a 3.

This list will not work, because noise is calculated by two additional variables besides the graphic card model.

The stress on the GPU and the perception of the owner.

i was just after the upgrade noise impressions.. I realise that noise is a function of perception and of environment... But am just after an appreciation.

at any rate, i am looking at the GTX 275 atm, anyone have any experience with this puppy, (or the 285), is it loud?

cheers
