So I heard a scratching sound under my desk. Looked around, saw nothing. Heard it again, and discovered one of the friendly locals from the backyard had wandered into the house, and decided the big warm metal thing you can hide under was a great place to hang out for a while.

I know you Aussies are different and all that, but that things head look like a snake which means I'd not pick it up even if it couldn't eat me. :p

haha, these are a fairly common pet species, about as inoffensive as an animal can be. We feed this one, and its larger neighbour.

You get used to reptiles here :)

For example when cycling, and you come around the corner to 8 or so feet of this guy:

Or the cafe of the (state-level) Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane:

Do you have a cat door or something? That's pretty big to sneak into the house through a crack or whatnot.

That's good to see those wildlife. In Hong Kong, the government keep ignore the citizens' will, destroy the environment, and build some completely useless rubbish. We can hardly see the blue sky in Hong Kong. What a shame!

This is a photo on Hong Kong's newspaper yesterday.

It's not photoshop, but real photo (the sky is grey, the visibility is very poor due to air pollution). These 2 ladies are the very senior officers in the government. They insist to use the wrong method to expand the Hong Kong airport at the wrong place, which cost >$140B (enough to build 2 completely new airport from scratch). However, despite it's so expensive, the money is just go into their pocket, but no money is spent to protect the wildlife. This project kill all the dolphins around, and now they draw some dolphins on the ground, step on it and smile happily. They are really really sick, but we have no right to vote them down, very very hopeless.

P.S. Sorry for completely off topic, but I really can't resist. I love those dolphins, now they all die, and I can't do anything to protect them.

Current working theory is that it came in behind someone else who had left the door open for a couple of minutes while putting some fruit out for them. If not that, then we're mystified as to how. We've had baby ones three inches long come in before. Sure is hilarious seeing them try to run, madly paddling away with their tiny legs, and going nowhere on the tile floor. :)
