Ok, so I was super excited about my new mac pro and although I of course didn't only get it for gaming, I was happy to be able to do some gaming on it.

But, I quickly noticed that every time I tried a game (crysis, battlefield bad company 2, left for dead 2, etc) the graphics card (ati radeon hd 5870) would crash after 5-10 minutes, displaying either a blue or black screen. This caused the computer to crash and I had to do a hard restart each time. I have the problem in both windows 7 and snow leopard.

So, I called apple support and the guy at first told me to take it to the apple store, but then told me that a senior advisor wanted to talk to me. So, I talked to the senior advisor and he told me that they were aware of the problem but were still researching it. He asked me if I would let them have my mac pro and then I would get a replacement. I said sure, and he said he'd call back after he checked if my local store had one in stock.

Of course he didn't call back so after a couple of days I contacted him through email and he called back the next day saying that he'd make an appointment for me at the apple store not mentioning getting a replacement anymore.

Today I went to my local apple store and sat there while the "geniuses" did a bunch of tests. After an hour the head genius came and said that the problem was caused by steam. I told them that I don't think its caused by steam as I have the same problem when playing games outside of steam, such as when playing Crysis, but he still insisted it was steam... I finally ended up leaving the comp there for further testing.

But, I'd like the input of the people here who have the ati 5870, can you guys play games in steam or outside of it without the card crashing? Or is this a common problem and does anyone have a fix?

I'm getting really frustrated with Apple. I no longer consider Apple a quality brand. The last 7-8 things I've purchased from them (3 iMacs, Cinema Display, Macbook Pro, and Mac Pro) have all had something wrong with them and their so called "Genius Bar" has been less than helpfull

hang on, so you left it with /them/ so they could diagnose the issue??

did you get a replacement in the mean time?

how are you now doing your work?

man, thats just not good enough.. and since when the hell is your mac pro thier ginny pig??

No problems playing games under Steam with my 5870 (L4D2, TF2, Torchlight...). Sorry to hear you're having problems. Hopefully they'll get your issues sorted out.

2009 mac pro 8-core with 5870.
I can play WOW or Steam for hours and the worst thing that happens is the fans go faster.

You've got a dud.

To add to the overall message of this thread. I have a 2010 Mac Pro with a 'flashed' i.e. PC version of XFX ATI 5870.

I play Half Life 2, HL 2 episode 1, HL 2 episode 2 and Civ V in Snow Leopard and Win 7. Never saw a glitch in more than 30 hrs of gameplay (on each OS!)

Now, I also used this card on a MacPro 2007 (2,1) also with Win 7 and Snow Leopard. Same thing, 30+ hrs of play with the card and never saw an issue on either OS.

You would think if this ATI card had issues with the drivers, a 'flashed' (Non-Apple blessed) card in snow leopard would exhibit some of this weird behavior. I never saw it in my case.

I thus infer that you indeed have a dud. The only way to know? Try another card, any other card in that same Mac Pro and play Steam. It is a shame is in 'genius' hands now.

No problems. Steam on OS X and Win 7 Pro. Not using anything boot camp though. It has to be HW if it is an issue in both OS's. And in Steam and using boxed games. Do you have the latest catalyst drivers in Win7?
Sounds like the genius copout. Steam had some issues with 10.6.3 but that is no longer the case.

Thanks for the replies, this just confirms that its not steam and prob just an excuse on their part not to replace the card.

I just checked the repair status online and it says its being repaired so not sure if their actually repairing it or if they are still testing it.

If they don't replace the graphics card then I'll either take it to another apple store or I'll call the senior advisor at apple again that I talked to before or I might just return it and possibly purchase a new one.

Also, I installed the latest drivers on Win 7 as well as older ones to see if they might work.

I hope they just replace it, don't why they wont replace it, after all I spent over $5,000 on the comp and screen. Bought apple care as well although its a shame its not included for free at the price.

Well, just got an email that the MP is ready for pickup so guess they didn't replace the GPU because they told me they didn't have in stock and had to order it first...

Just got off the phone with the tech, he still said its steam but he finally gave in and their replacing the card.

Even though you told him in Win AND with boxed games? What a tool. Not even tech, just common sense.

Steam is just an app launcher and manager, each game loads in it's own space and uses it's own graphics engine.

So the answer of "It's Steam" is pretty stupid. Good thing you are getting it replaced though :)

Kind of makes me mad that they would say that, when they know that's not true. Steam works perfectly fine on other Mac Pros, and on other PCs. That "genius" obviously doesn't know what hes talking about. That card should be able to run those games fine

They are usually kids who take a very basic "Apple way" A+ test and then get paid fairly terrible wages to deal with so many grandma's. In my experience they tend to be out of their depth and ego centric.

Actually, the genius who tested the Mac Pro at first said it's most likely the card, but then the "head genius" came out, looked at the log and said its steam. After, that the other geniuses and the tech said it's steam too, just cuz their boss said so.

But, I'm glad their replacing it although I'm not sure if they actually are going to replace it or if they just are going to say they replaced it.

I guess I'll have to wait and see. The tech wasn't very happy when I told him it's not steam but the card so I'm sure my mac pro is at the very bottom of their list :p

Next time I'm going to a different store.

Don't listen to the "geniuses."

Over Christmas, I had to load Snow Leopard onto a Mac Pro. Problem is the Snow Leopard disc was one of those first-day early release discs that many Macs had trouble reading. Damn disc would not boot.

Drive over to the local Apple Store and I ask a "Genius" for a replacement disc after explaining the situation. "Genius" insists it's a bad superdrive on Mac Pro, despite me telling him at least five times the superdrive has had zero problems, save this one Snow Leopard disc.

A few more minutes of back-and-forth, they relent. I get a new Snow Leopard disc from the Apple Store. Go home, pop it in, boom, the new Snow Leopard disc boots without any issue and OS X is on the machine 30 minutes later.

More often than not, it pays to stick to your guns.

PS I run Steam in bootcamp, zero problems. Runs great.

I avoid the Apple stores at all costs. Their "geniuses" are anything butt. For such a company with such stellar products their frontline customer service SUCKS!

I think my favorite Apple store story is going in their for an ipod case, going to the genius bar to be rung up, and they all are either helping people or sitting around BSing with eachother looking at the line of people who need to be rung up. As soon as I turn to the lady behind me in line and loudly go "I GUESS EVERYTHING IS FREE TODAY CAUSE NO ONE WANTS TO RING US UP" people come jumping in with scanners. The stores are run by morons.

And it isn't Steam I run it fine in both OSX and Win 7.

I have the same sort of opinion on them.

Took delivery of my 2010 base quad with a 5870, it would frequently shut off/ not turn on at all. Diagnosed as a power supply issue.

They were all in a huff saying id have to wait for a replacement because i had a custom. I told them just swap cards and we can get on with our day, 30 min later i was walking out to go play Sc2.
