Ok, so I was super excited about my new mac pro and although I of course didn't only get it for gaming, I was happy to be able to do some gaming on it.
But, I quickly noticed that every time I tried a game (crysis, battlefield bad company 2, left for dead 2, etc) the graphics card (ati radeon hd 5870) would crash after 5-10 minutes, displaying either a blue or black screen. This caused the computer to crash and I had to do a hard restart each time. I have the problem in both windows 7 and snow leopard.
So, I called apple support and the guy at first told me to take it to the apple store, but then told me that a senior advisor wanted to talk to me. So, I talked to the senior advisor and he told me that they were aware of the problem but were still researching it. He asked me if I would let them have my mac pro and then I would get a replacement. I said sure, and he said he'd call back after he checked if my local store had one in stock.
Of course he didn't call back so after a couple of days I contacted him through email and he called back the next day saying that he'd make an appointment for me at the apple store not mentioning getting a replacement anymore.
Today I went to my local apple store and sat there while the "geniuses" did a bunch of tests. After an hour the head genius came and said that the problem was caused by steam. I told them that I don't think its caused by steam as I have the same problem when playing games outside of steam, such as when playing Crysis, but he still insisted it was steam... I finally ended up leaving the comp there for further testing.
But, I'd like the input of the people here who have the ati 5870, can you guys play games in steam or outside of it without the card crashing? Or is this a common problem and does anyone have a fix?
I'm getting really frustrated with Apple. I no longer consider Apple a quality brand. The last 7-8 things I've purchased from them (3 iMacs, Cinema Display, Macbook Pro, and Mac Pro) have all had something wrong with them and their so called "Genius Bar" has been less than helpfull
