My Mac Pro arrived today, and I've been playing around with it this evening. I was away from it for awhile, so I put it to sleep. When I returned, I clicked the mouse to wake it up. My desktop appeared for a second and then the screen (brand new 23" ACD) went black again. It then started flashing a solid blue screen every few seconds. The sleep light on the Mac Pro was solid (indicating not sleeping), but the display sleep light was pulsating. I had to do a hard shut down to get it back. When I had restarted, I tried sleeping the display by itself, and it woke up with no problems.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any suggestions?

I have had that (or something similar) happen with my PowerMac once or twice, so if I were you, I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again.

Holding down the power button until the computer shuts itself off.

Rich.

don't worry about it... it sometimes happens... very occasional

it is my experience, that the OS X installed from the factory isn't as stable as OS X can be.

I usually do a clean install with the DVD before i use it... it makes in my opinion the os more stable AND saves 20 gig of space...

Sleepiness

By the way, I've heard it's better for your computer if you never let it go to sleep. - Leave it on every night unless you'll be a way a day or more. Is this true? I usually keep the hard drives spinning, just not sure on sleepiness.

Well...maybe not so occasional. Last night I put the machine to sleep manually for the second time. Again, it did not wake up properly. I restarted and set the sleep timer to 10 minutes. I went to bed and let the machine sleep automatically. This morning I tried to wake it up by hitting the space bar. The desktop appeared briefly, maybe a little longer than before, and then the display went blank again. So that's three times sleeping, three times not waking up.

Other than this my Mac Pro is running fine. I haven't really pushed it yet because I haven't received my FCS crossgrade, but I haven't noticed any other problems.

Do you guys think I should call Apple, or should I attempt a reinstall first?

I like to put my computers to sleep when I'm not using them to conserve energy. I don't know exactly how much it saves, but I feel better about it. I think most people who leave their computers on over night do so to let the 3:00am cron jobs run, but I just run them manually in the terminal.

I used to leave my 2.5 dual running 24/7 until I read in MacUser that it was the equivalent of leaving a toaster on! She now just sleeps like a baby
