Mac programs.....

I haven't done the switch yet, but one thing i wonder is, are there near as much apps for mac as for the pc? Let me rephrase that, is there a lot of Mac programs on the net, because on my pc, i have tons of programs...Everytime i see a mac, i see less than 15 programs on average, correct me if im wrong...

there are thousands of mac programs. most of which are completely irrelevent to you.

The question you should be asking is does it have the programs you need. For most people, the answer is a big yes. you can get MS office for the mac, or apple's own word processor, spread sheet and presentation software. There are games (not as many as for windows) chat software, internet software, educational software, video editing, sound editing, photo editing, music buying, science programs, math programs, everything under the sun. There are major developers of mac software like microsoft and adobe, and lots of smaller developers as well.

Shoot, macs ship with way more than 15 apps bundled on them. apple should have lists of bundled software on their website.

You might want to look at versiontracker.com there's a big group of developers. enough so that apple just spend tens of thousands of dollars putting on a world wide developer conference yesterday and this week.

So tell us what you need, and chances are its available for mac.

the oen thing mac won't have is 100 versions of solitaire.

I just meant there won't be 100 different versions of it. Windows has more software, but much of it is just minor variations of the same thing. There are certainly several versions of a lot of things on a mac, just not the overwhelming amount you find on windows. Especially with card games.

Sigh, I never get tired of hearing a PC user get so surprised at what is available for Macs. Its all here dude. Limewire and Acquisition are my favorites for finding music, as for files bittorent is quite popular. Although not necessarily legal.

So what were the specs of your old Mac? (couldn't help myself)
I started on a 16mhz 68020motorola.

If it helps you any, I switched last fall, and I haven't really run into a problem not being able to find software I want or need for the Mac. I have around 100 applications installed on my PowerBook right now, which is more than I had on my Windows machine. It's true that overall there are less programs available for Mac that for Windows, but it seems like that mostly is because you'll find a whole bunch of mediocre to bad programs to do something for Windows, while only a few are good. On the Mac, generally you find just a few programs to do something, but they're all much better than the average free/shareware Windows program.

Unless you're expecting to do something really exotic with your Mac, don't worry about being able to get software. If you do need some relatively obscure piece of software, be sure to check for a Mac version at some of the sites listed by other posters in this thread.

Yup, LimeWire comes in an os x flavour.
google for it, and if you can't find it, PM me and I'll email it over.

my old mac was
a Macintosh Peforma (500 i think)
32 Mhz
5 mb's of ram
160 mb hard drive (got upgraded to 1 gig, that was huge back in the day)

You know whats funny, I used to play cd's (listen to music), and play wolfenstein 3d (boy thats an old game) at the same time with no problem..10 years later, my pc can barely do that...

FastTrack is pretty full featured, but just search versiontracker for project management software.

There is also some open source stuff on sourceforge
