Mac randomly restarts

So this has happened to me twice already. First time it happened, I didnt even know it had happened until I opened up my computer and it was on a black screen with some info on it. The second time it happened I was watching a Youtube video and all of a sudden it started stuttering and then my computer restarted and went to that black screen with some info on it again. I don't have a full pic but I found it online... I dont really want to restore my computer to factory but at this point I guess I should. What do you guys think?

Run the console application in the /Applications/Utilites folder. Look for entries that end with ".crash" around the date and time that the restart happened. Post the log using the QUOTE /QUOTE tag.

So there's only one entry for the last date I remember it happening, which was the 19th at around 7pm. There's nothing in the log for that day. Everything starts up again on the 20th but I don't see anything that says 'crash'.

What you are seeing there is called a kernel panic. You can read a bit about it here.

Triple click the line below then right click and in the Services menu select Reveal in Finder. Look through that folder for a crash log from the date/time of the crash, then post the contents of the log here for us to take a look.

Do not restore or reinstall anything just yet, as that is unlikely to help.

Try looking in the console app in the Utilities folder and search for the word "previous", you should see a bunch of entries like this :
8/27/15 4:52:06.000 PM kernel[0]: Previous shutdown cause: 5

The codes aren't widely documented, but IIRC a 5 is a shutdown from the Finder menu, and a 3 is another normal code.
But there are some other codes (both positive and negative numbers) which indicate thermal, CPU and other improper shutdown/reboots.
Hopefully this helps.

EDIT: Didn't realize I still had this document, but here is what little I found from scouring the web about shutdown codes, when I was having spontaneous reboots a while back.
Hopefully this helps.

Previous shutdown causes:
0 -Loss of Mains power (possible PSU failure)
3 -possible RAM/ Northbridge error
5 -Normal shutdown command from Finder menu

-2 -hardware error (logic board)
-30 -SMC error
-60 -bad master directory block error (drive error)
-72 -misc. hardware error (?)
-108 -memory error
-128 -misc. thermal error

Looks like Ill have to take it in to Apple for them to run a diagnostic test. I should probably restore before taking them my computer, wouldnt you say? Just to avoid any privacy issues I suppose.

I would make a complete Time Machine backup, then set that aside. Then command-r boot to recovery and from there use Disk Utility to erase Macintosh HD. Then quit DU and click reinstall OS. At the end just make a temp admin account they can use to test.

That will get your data off of there and also hopefully satisfy Apple when they tell you their magic answer to everything to do a clean install. You can just smile and explain you already did.

You might want to save off those logs to a USB key you can give them though.

Then when you get it back, just option key boot to the TM backup disk. From there use DU to erase and click restore... and you ill be all set.

One last question! I've never restored a Mac before so I'm not sure if it works like windows. Can I restore only certain things from TM backup or does it have to be the whole thing? There are two ways to approach this.

This first is to use the TM backup to do a full restore. So you option key boot to the TM disk then erase the internal drive and click restore. That puts the OS and your user account and all your data back on the drive. There are no options... it all goes on there.

The other option is to command-r boot to recovery and erase the drive from there then reinstall the OS. At the end a setup assistant will run. From there you can "migrate" your data from the TM backup. When you do that there is some control over what comes in. You will get to screen similar to this. So you would check your user account to bring that in, but you could uncheck the Music folder if you did not want that.

This would bring in iPassword as well.
