Hi,
3 of my keys did not work anymore on my mac keyboad and i brought it back for repair to my mac reseller (not an Apple store but an autorized reseller).

To my surprise, he asked me out loud the admin user password of my macbook. He typed it and printed on the paper they aknowledge they are going to repair it. So, now anyone can log to my computer by reading this paper they printed at their shop.

I am not stupid and i have several password for email, bank account, google drive, Icloud account... Nevertheless, it is always possible to find those passwords from my computer for sure. So, i know i am going to change ALL my passwords when i will get my macbook back.

I d like to know if they have the same process when we bring an apple product to a real Apple Store :apple: for repair meaning do they ask you for your admin password when you have an identified hardware problem (not a software problem? Do they ask you for your admin user password? Do they print your admin password on a paper?

thks.

How else do you expect him to fix your stuff without an admin password? Granted, the issue is a hardware problem. but there might be newer software components to install.

IMHO, the reseller should have let the owner create a new admin-user with a password the reseller is allowed to know.
After fixing it the temp-admin user should then be deleted.

Why unless it is disabled on the machine then anyone with physical access can reset your admin password by booting into single user mode.

Before I ever take one of my Macs into the Apple store for service, I always (if possible) create an account with user name Apple and password Apple. The Genius always thanks me.

I know.
Resetting (altering) an admin-password in Single User mode only resets the account password, not the keychain password. Resetting someone's password is annoying for the user.

I had a similar experience recently, but because my MBP would not power on at all, my only option was to give them the password. They did, at least, allow me to type it in, but it printed out when they gave me my receipt. I pointed that out and asked them to change it. They said they were expecting an upgrade to the software they used and would make sure to have that field masked for printing.
