thanks for posting that pic, it gave me a laugh! all those little lights in the classroom... Must be a popular class too, it's packed full in there!

Do you have it in a bigger size though? Be nice to try and spot whether there's any other machines there, just for a laugh.

As for the question, I did an archaeology degree (class of '06), in a hot shot British university, and I think most people ran Windows--the campus machines certainly did. But laptops weren't nearly as visible as they seem to be on lots of American campuses. For example Library work was usually on paper only; most people seemed to borrow the books if there was more comprehensive notetaking to be carried out. Plus, we didn't show up to class with a computer, we just took notes on paper. There was nowhere to even put the thing, all we had was those ridiculous half-sized swiveling desks that are attached to the chair, like they use in conference rooms, and we often didn't even have enough space for a full size a4 notebook, let alone a computer! (Can you tell I'm jealous of those students, lol jk)

I dunno what the subject could be though. This lot look quite young, so I'm guessing they're undergrads, which points towards simpler, lower-spec machines (although a history phd will likely be able to get by with a lower-spec beast than an engineering or graphic design undergrad). This principle could lead us to look at the ratio of MBPs to MBs, to see how "technical" (OK, that's a lame term, but you know what I mean) the course is. But that doesn't help much, because while I do see a lot of MBPs, there's also quite a few MBs, mostly black though so more powerful than other MBs, so we can't tell much from that. Another clue, more dodgy this time, would be to look at the mix of sexes--the humanities, overall, tend to be female-dominated (my humanities-oriented high-school class was nicknamed The Harem. There were precisely 6 guys, out of 30 students :) ), while more technical and/or scientific stuff tends to have either a nice mix of both or to have more guys. Which again doesn't tell us a lot, because this lot seem about half and half :)

In which field of study are macs moslty used?!

Surely most degrees involve writing papers, researching online etc. etc. so why not use a Mac? especially with Windows there too.

In which fields of study are Macs not used?

Here and here are the larger versions. :) Apparently they were taken at The Missouri School of Journalism.

These are the reasons they give for recommending Macs:
Q. What brand or model should I buy?
A. The faculty has designated Apple Computer as its preferred provider for two primary reasons: (1) Apple's OS X operating system is based on Unix, which makes these computers far less susceptible to viruses than other computers. Viruses are a serious problem on university campuses. (2) Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro computers come bundled with iLife, a suite of applications ideal for learning the basics of photo editing, and audio and video editing. We'll use those programs in several classes. Incoming students will receive information on recommended models and pricing in February of each year.

In europe many universities take it for granted to work with windows-machines... though some art studies require mac machines.
