Hi,

I have just received a new Mac Studio and for some reason the my LG Ultrafine 5k is being detected as having a native resolution of 4096x2304. It works perfectly with my MacBook so I'm not sure what is happening. I've deleted the OS disk and re-installed. I've also used the option key when looking at scaled resolutions and max resolution available is the above.

I'd be really grateful for any thoughts. Thanks!

How are you connecting to the Mac Studio with the monitor? Only thing I can think of is that on the base Mac Studio, the front ports are not thunderbolt but USB-C only, and that would limit the display to 4k.

Thanks for the reply. I'm connecting using the ports at the back so I don't think that's the issue. However the plot thickens...I just checked system report and the full resolution is reported there but doesn't correspond with the resolution options or what is being reported in the display information. Very strange.

Apologies if this seems like a "dumb" question, but are you using the same physical cable to connect the display to both your MacBook and the Studio? Some HDMI/DisplayPort/USB-C cables are not able to support the amount of bandwidth needed for high-res monitors. For example, on my (Windows) desktop which has a GeForce RTX 3080 installed, I cannot push my 1440p display to 144Hz, via HDMI. I can only use it to its fullest if I use a DisplayPort connection, and an appropriate cable. I had to RMA the first cable I purchased, as it was faulty and could not support the advertised bandwidth.

Have you checked this link: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-studio/connect-a-display-apdb8aa4c9cb/mac

I don't believe the HDMI port on the Mac Studio can support 5K either :-(

Good luck!

Rich S.

Not a dumb question at all. I am using the same cable but it doesn't seem to be particularly high quality. I purchased the monitor second hand and it was the cable provided....not an original Apple or LG one so it could definitely be the problem. If that is the issue then it's odd that it works with the MacBook but not the Studio. I have an Apple cable arriving tomorrow so hopefully that will solve it.

I was going to say cable issue originally but you reported that it works with your macbook to LG ok... Hoping it's the apple replacement cable works for you.

Thanks. I'm hoping it's down to the cable as I am not sharing the ports and I get the limited resolution when the single monitor is the only peripheral.
