My 10/24/16 64GB 4TB Studio with Studio Display is on its way, arriving May 3. I'm upgrading from my trusty 2012 iMac. The iMac sits in a cabinet I made which has a shelf big enough for a 19-inch Viewsonic second monitor. I'd like to purchase a new 19-inch display to go with my new setup. There isn't room for anything larger. It'll be used occasionally for text, web pages, and movies. Does anyone have a suggestion on which 19-inch display to buy? I'm not sure whether display port or HDMI cabling would be better. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I have this one from Dell in my place of work. It’s simple and nice for everyday tasks. Just get a USB-C to DisplayPort cable from Amazon (Cables Matters is a good one) and you should be good to go!!

I am using an Ipad as secondary display. I am driving it with Luna display and it works like a charm. And with universal control I can just jump between the screens flawlessly.

OP:

If you already have a 19" Viewsonic (I have a Viewsonic 27", 9 years old and still doing fine), why not just keep using it for the time being? Is something wrong with it?

There's nothing wrong with the monitor. My iMac was paired via VGA and would give warnings when watching some movies from DVD that the monitor had some type of resolution problem and the video would not play. I apologize for not remembering the exact message. It was hooked up via an Apple adapter to VGA on the monitor. I guess I'm looking for a more modern monitor since this one is about twelve years old. From what I've read DisplayPort is better than HDMI. I looked at the Dell 19 inch, but a comment on the BestBuy site said it wasn't recommended for M1 Macs.

I'm limited by size. It needs to be 19-20 inches wide. After a lot of shopping around I like the features of the ASUS VP229Q. Walmart sells it for $139 with free shipping. Amazon has it for $161. It has DisplayPort, HDMI, and VGA connections. Its actual width is 19.2 inches. I asked ASUS support if they had any issues using this display with a Mac Studio, and they said they had no problems reported. I also asked if it could be used in portrait mode if I used a rotating VESA mount. He said that was controlled by computer settings, not the display. I've never tried portrait mode, but it might be useful. Anyone had experience with ASUS displays?I'm just about sold on it.

Why drive it with Luna display when Sidecar is built in?
In my case because I also use it with Astropad. In this combination it offers more functionality than Sidecar.

But certainly it only makes sense to use Luna display/Astropad if you want to use this extended possibilities or if you want to use hardware that does not support sidecar...

After tons of research, I bought an Asus VA229Q from Walmart.com @ $139. The product descriptions neglect to tell you the exact type of cables included, but mine came with DisplayPort, HDMI, and VGA ports. DisplayPort and HDMI cables were included. From Amazon, I bought a DisplayPort to USB C Anker brand adaptor. I also bought a VESA wall mount that includes the ability to rotate. (Pipishell Full Motion TV Monitor Wall Mount $19.99) The 22-inch monitor was dictated by the size of the shelf where I was installing it. The monitor is gorgeous! Although the web descriptions don't mention it, the monitor is able to rotate 90, 180, or 270 degrees using the Mac System Preference panel. The included stand isn't tall enough to allow for rotation, but wall mounting it allowed rotation just fine. I'm really pleased with the second monitor. This monitor was a great choice for a second monitor. I never intended it to match the size of the Studio Display, since it doesn't sit right next to it.
