Open disk utility.
There's an option there to view "snapshots".
Do you have a bunch of them?

If so, my advice is: just delete them all.
Once this is done, check storage again.

Personal experience:
I NEVER use the "storage" indication as a reliable measure of "what's on my drive".
If I want to know that, I use "Diskwave" instead (small, free app).
