Mac Studio Ultra Kernel Panics – userspace watchdog timeout

I searched and found an older thread where this was happening with Catalina.. link

Brand new Mac Studio Ultra, clean slate install, very few things installed thus far. Softraid for my OWC Raid and Loupedeck are the only things plugged in. I've used Softraid and the same raid with my earlier Mac Pro 7,1 without issue.. for over a year. With my M1 MBP max, the max could never actually index the raid without running out of ram or just becoming unresponsive.. odd, but that's another issue. My hope was the more powerful Ultra with more ram would be fine.

Thus far, it has been, it indexed the 112tb raid without issue. This all said... tonight a new issue occurred.

System was not being used, screen was off but system was not asleep, I learned from earlier M1's (m1 Mini and M1 MBP Max) to not let them sleep because often they do not wake for whatever bug reason.

I return two hours later, my screen is dark but pushing a key or moving the mouse doesn't bring the screen to life. Instead, it just sort of does nothing.. nothing is responsive. Finally the computer just restarts out of nowhere, all i was doing was randomly clicking keys and clicking the mouse, trying to get it to wake tf up. lol

I then see this..

I’d wait a bit to see if it occurs again. If it does, then your best bet will be to contact Apple support and work with one of their engineers to determine what is going on.

If you prefer to troubleshoot on your own, you can remove the two items that you’ve added to make sure it doesn’t fail in its default configuration and then add them back one at a time to see which one causes the issue.

Been some time since I checked in on this thread..

Using my M1 Ultra 128 daily from buying it. Yes, initially there some crashes and yes, that still happens on occasion for various reasons.

What I have learned is that changing my work habits, my workflow if you will has been the largest factor in both my expectations being met as well the system being what I had hoped.

We see the press releases, or the occasional youtuber doing a speed test showing a gain of 30%, 50% etc over other macs and assume this little beast is in infallible. That of course, not true of any system.

I use a ram monitoring app that sits in my top menu bar (eating ram, ironically) and I have my prefs set so when it gets below 10% available remaining, it refreshes... dumping the cache etc. That as well as modifying the prefs of apps that allow me to change ram usage such as Adobe, CaptureOne etc... my Ultra has started to be predictable and I know when I walk away with 300 videos queued to deinterlace, deflicker, reduce banding, add a basic 'clean up' lut and export... it will walk through them one by one, without issue.

My M1 Max MBP (64) was not able to handle this workflow without reseting. I had assumed it was a simple ram deficiency between the Max's 64 and the Ultra's 128 rather than a Monterey bug... but they have updated/patched Monterey a few times since so.... no idea.

It still bottoms out sometimes, or random resets with kernal 1 panicking... Truth is, I most likely caused them by asking too much of it. Used to my 2019 Intel Mac Pro's 384gb ram... which never random reset/crashed for whatever reason.

Weird how we all expect our machines to be perfect, always. ?
