Finally, Mac OS support for UDK. I was very patient for this, but now we can all finally enjoy and develop on Mac for Mac/iOS just as how it was meant to be. Today is a good day. BTW, Gears 3!!!:D:D:D

UE3 UDK does not mean Gears 3 will automatically be on the Mac unless Epic have announced it recently. I know their had been rumours a few years back but I would wait for more news before celebrating :)

Oh that's obvious to a toddler, I'm just saying that Gears 3 comes out today FOR Xbox 360 which was created by Epic Games who license the UDK.

Edwin did you guys use an earlier version of this in house for the UE3 (UE2.5) projects you've done?

No we never used the UDK, every Feral port we ported the entire game and engine to the Mac ourselves (so the first UE3 game on the Mac was Borderlands), I don't think the UDK will make porting that much easier as most AAA games heavily modify the UDK (with DirectX based changes) so you will still have a lot of work getting it to run on a Mac. For example BioShock has huge modifications primarily water effects meaning the engine is a lot different from the original vanilla UE engine.

Playstation 3 (another UDK target) mentions OpenGL in the graphics literature but nobody uses PS3 OGL in games. This means the Mac is the odd one out when it comes to using high end OGL in gaming so getting the engine to run on a Mac often requires some complex effort and the writing of custom Mac only code.

iOS and Android use OGL-ES but that is a lot less complicated compared to the PC/Mac/Console engine so is not that relevant to this discussion. That said I am pleased that UDK is on the Mac and hopefully it will mean more games for Mac users as I was a Mac gamer long before I was a Mac game maker :)

I was under the impression Microsoft had exclusive publishing rights on the Gears Of War franchise.

Microsoft-published games have come to the Mac before (Age of Empires series.)

GoW 1 (and UT3) was announced for the mac way back in 2007. I wonder if they will still bother to port those games, or just move on to GoW 3 and newer stuff.

I'm aware of that. Even the original Halo has been released for the Mac. That said Microsoft is pretty protective of it's I.P.'s and considering how important Gears Of War is to their Xbox division I would be very surprised if any of the games are released on the Mac. In fact I believe one of the previous two were released on PC and that is a more likely platform for number three. Even on the PC it was delayed so as not to cannibalise sales from their Xbox division.

@Mr.C,

Only the first GoW was released on PC. I'm with you, I can't see GoW ever coming to Mac as long as MS owns the IP.

I'm pretty sure that Microsoft is going to use GoW 2 and GoW 3 as a too-little-too-late ploy to try and get us PC guys that are quite contempt with Win7/XP and STEAM to migrate to their new abomination of an OS Metro along with some of their Xbox fans.

Thank you Epic! I can now officially get rid of Windows :D

Edit: Oops maybe not, it appears that its just for publishing on Mac OS not developing :( No matter I use Unity mostly anyway.

geez. somebody really wants GOW 3 to be on mac? are you dreaming or something? it's xbox 360 exclusive game. Epic hasn't developed GOW games for PC so far. gears of war 1 was only version for PC. do you even have any kind of knowledge on gaming market?

As you pointed out (then contradicted) GOW has been on the PC once before (and that version was promised for the Mac).

The original posters comment about GOW3 (which you are talking about) was just that GOW3 was just released not that they expected it on the Mac. My original reply to the OP was incorrect in that regard.

Lets all try and be polite about no need to get aggressive. :)
