OK so i would like to see a "MacPod" as i call it which would be an iPhone but with a 5-8 inch screen and full OS X.
But I have now heard it is going to be bigger than that so this is a Quick Mock up of what i think it will look like. (Yes when i say quick i mean quick)
Basicly i think it will be based on the air.......


My Preferred Stats:
~5inch Display
~1.4 or 1.6Ghz
~1GB Ram for space conservation but more likely 2GB
~32GB or 64GB SSD or possibly a 128GB SSD or 160GB HDD
~iSight
~3G internet capabilities (no phone)
~GPS
~.5 inches thick
tell me what u think

The Macbook Air is really a niche/RDF product...and this tablet is even moreso.

I honestly fail to see the purpose/market for such a product. with a 5-8 inch screen...its pointless. Might as well get a netbook or an iPhone.
 
5-8" screen???

What's the point. I don't see where it adds any value over the iPhone or Touch. Besides the coolness factor, I fail to see where there is any market for a Tablet.

I bet we will see an inexpensive, ultraportable

Respectfully disagree. Every functional tablet on the market is in the 12 inch range. The best being the former IBM thinkpad models. They are so good, I have set a deadline of Macworld '09. No tablet by then, my personal machine goes back to Windows.
 
I've seen a 7" screen with a full keyboard and it looked pretty awesome, with great WiFi reception at the golf course in Palm Springs, just last week. Pretty compact, but I didn't get the name of it b/c I had too many Bloody Mary's w/vodka. He was the purchasing agent for the bar at the golf course and gave a quick demo for us.:confused:
 
I'm going to have to agree...what wood be the purpose...but that's the same thing they said about the MBA...and I love mine!!
 
I think a Mac Touch notebook would be pretty cool. I think something the size of the MBA for the Mac Touch would be a good size.
Or even for the so known "tablet" rumor, the MBA would be a good size for it, or even a MBP size too. I currently own a Gateway Tablet PC, and tablet functionalities work supurb. It depends how you look at it though. I didn't use my tablet feature for my laptop as much as I thought. I found it to be quite a hassle actually.
Same for me in an opinion for a Mac Touch... I'd think about it before I buy it, so I really use the touch feature.
But so far, I'm leaning toward MBA hopefully if a new gen. comes out soon.

But for the Mac touch, I hope it would have better specs.

Just putting in my $0.02. :)
 
Hmmm, I'd love to be able to put my idea of what it'd look like into photoshop. To me, this looks terrible. Why would it have a home button? And I don't think there is a need for the buttons on the side (volume, silent switch).

But I do believe a Mac Tablet would be amazing. I have been thinking about it a lot lately. More-so the software and the gestures you could use...

- 4-5 fingers expanding for expose.
- just "swoosh" your fingers around the screen to view the desktop as if wiping the screen
 
12" screen would be perfect. If it was any smaller than that I think it'd slide down into the 'cool accessory' category, instead of being a product that people would seriously consider working with.

The picture graficat posted looks like a pimped up kindle xP
 
My bet is the purpose is to compete with the netbooks (think eepc) coming out. The new Dell model is supposed to start at $299 but comes with a crippled linux distro. If Apple could get a small to medium sized (5-7 inch) tablet for that crowd, which still ran a full version of OSX they could take the field with a price of around $500. The real question is can they meet that price point?

Also remember that this rumor has been floating around for years. As an original Newton owner I would love to see it, but I do not expect it.

ok the keyboard on the iPhone is functional right? so what if it was on its side and a little bigger it would be perfect. not to mention u could use a bluetooth or usb keyboard

it would allow people to have Quick way to make documents and do full function tasks on the go

~The Home button is like an expose key or posibly the device would have an "iPhone"/"iPod Touch" style home screen that would allow u to quickly activate tasks
~The 4 finger expose and "swoosh" are good ideas

But u cant carry around a 12 inch device in your hand. The iPhone is about the perfect size for that, so if it was just a little bit bigger it would be just right to carry around or pop in and out of your briefcase

exactly but i would think they would be around $700 if u consider the iPhone is subsidized to $199 and its estimated cost is $550 with a :
~Bigger processor
~Bigger screen
~bigger SSD

it would be more than $500
 
If you're talking about just a huge ol' iPhone with full OSX, I'm not quite sure how successful that would be. The keyboard of the iPhone is indeed "functional," but it's probably one of the biggest weaknesses the iPhone has. A full-fledged tablet would be much better equipped to fill the needs of the average user. Some users can dream about an Eeepc-like device coming from apple, but their track record has shown that they have no interest in producing low-end or inexpensive gadgets. I'd say that the base price for any truly ultra mobile PC from apple would be about $1000, give or take a couple hundred.

i know what u are saying and no aple will never make a cheap PC that is not what i want.

Just imagine the iPhone keyboard tuned sidewise like u can in Safari but bigger with bigger buttons
 
I'm thinking about starting a web site where people can come and dream about a mac tablet.

It will have all the thousands of photoshop mock-ups and will be so extensive that while your there you will swear that it's real.

the forums will be:

imaginary Mac tablet hardware
imaginary Mac tablet software
imaginary Mac tablet accessories
imaginary Mac tablet touch display
imaginary Mac tablet buy & selling
imaginary Mac tablet off topic (real things)

what do you think?
 
No matter how you spin it, tactile keyboards beat non-tactile any day. A non-tactile keyboard can come extremely close (the iPhone's soft keyboard is almost as good as it gets), but at the end of the day you just can't beat the ease-of-use of a tactile keyboard.

PS: There is already one company that takes macbooks and turns them into tablet PCs. No "imaginary" things necessary.

How are you supposed to run Mac OS X on a 5" screen?

I believe this (mini-)tablet will come out at MWSF 2009. It'll have a ~5.5" screen, iPhone OS (more advanced than the iPhone's), iLife, iWork, and a few ports. $500.

It'll have some of the high points of a Mac (iLife, iWork) in a small package for a low price.

Those wanting a Mac OS X device: It'll most likely cost $1000 for a cramped screen and low performance.

Again whats the point? To have a small screen and a keyboard that is impossible to type on? People already b1tch about typing on the iPhone. I can't imagine what it would be like when they are actually trying work on documents on a tablet.

The only use I would want a tablet for is to connect a digital camera up to it and download pictures to it. Then I could display the pics on a larger screen or upload to flickr or something. To me, it wouldn't be worth the price.
