In our dorm room we have three computers all hooked up to a router. One PC (XP Home), one G5 (10.4) and a Powerbook (10.4). The two desktops are wired into the router with ethernet. The Powerbook runs wirelessly on the network. All three computers have the same workgroup name. The two macs have no trouble seeing each other. The PC can "see" the other macs when I browse in explorer (My Network Places > Microsoft Windows Network > Workgroup) but if I try to click on either of the Macs, I get a permission error. There is a Canon PIXMA i4000 printer hooked up to the PC and all we want to do is be able to print from the Macs. If I try to add a printer using either of the Macs, the Windows PC never shows up in the workgroup. All of the windows sharing options that I know of are enabled on the macs. What else do I need to do? Help! Thanks.

Try installing Bonjour for Windows on the PC and then try re-finding that printer. :)

When I run the Bonjour Printing Wizard, all it does is show me the list of printers I can already see on my Macs. The canon printer on my PC that I want doesn't show up.

I don't know much about Bonjour, but it seems like it would be useful for connecting to a Mac printer from a PC. My problem is the other way around: there is a computer hooked up to my PC that I want to print to from my macs.

So, you've installed Bonjour for Windows on the PC, you've restarted. You've gone to the System Preferences and under the Print & Fax icon, you've selected the little plus to add a new printer. The Printer Set Up Utility has open. Alternatively, you could have opened this app from the Utilities folder in your Applications folder.

Now, you've selected the More Printers button down the bottom if it doesn't already show up in the list. You've selected Windows printing from the drop down list. You've put in all the relevant information that it asks for and it still won't connect?

Which part are you stuck at? :)

Bonjour is installed on my Windows PC... but I haven't really done anything with it. On my Mac: when I hit the plus sign and select "More Printers" followed by Windows Printing, my PC doesn't show up in the Workgroup that it should. It just isn't there, and I don't understand why? Both workgroups are the same and the printer is shared.

Bonjour for Windows simply provides the PC with a similar language to that used by the Mac for connecting peripherals. Still, I'm not sure why the PC won't show up. Maybe try connecting to a shared volume on the PC and then, while it is connected, look for the printer using the method I outlined. It may need a slight prompt before it can connect for the first time.

Hey the short answer for this is that its not going to work. I have talked to about 8 tech reps at Canon about the reasons. Pretty much the ONLY printer they support networking for is the ip4000R and the newer version of that. The print modules are made specifically to not work like that.

I hate to say this but I've been through the same thing. After 2 weeks of trying to get it working I finally realized its not going to work.

Bonjour is NOT going to fix this situation.

I currently DO have the My Documents folder on my PC mounted on my PowerBook and I can view the files and folders fine, so they are obviously communicating with each other. Still though, the PC doesn't show up in the Windows Printing Workgroup when I try to add a printer. Any other ideas? Thanks.

It really sucks that it won't work since the ip4000 is a great printer. Take a look at the ip4000R or the newer version. They have a built-in printer server but they are about $70 more expensive. OR you can buy a seperate wireless print server.

The Airport Express seems to work well though.

Bad times... well at least I can give up now. One mystery that still doesn't seem to be solved is why my PC won't even show up in the Workgroup in the Printer Browser of the Printer Setup Utility. The Powerbook and my roommates G5 are displayed, but the PC doesn't appear at all.

That's your problem. I'm pretty sure that once we get it to show up, we'll be able to get you connected to the printer very easily. I just can't for the life of me think why it won't show up. You mentioned that you are currently connected to the PC with file-sharing? Is there a chance you are maxing out your network bandwidth at the moment? Is the network handling large volumes of traffic ATM?

Also, if you could connect the printer to your router, it's much easier to configure from both operating systems, if it's possible at all. :)

Trust me thats not his problem. Even my iBook saw the printer but it still is not able to print to that printer. The ip4000 is not 'pre-networkable' so it cannot be hooked up to a router. The Powerbook would need to be able to associate printer modules/drivers with the ip4000 but you would have to choose that manually or it would detect it automatically (if the printer was networkable).

I had the same problem and truthfully forgot how I fixed it. On the Powerbook make sure the network setting are setup for 'windows sharing'. But I ended up fixing that problem somewhere on my PC. Like I said though I totally forgot how I got it to view the computer and printer. BUT even when it did that didn't solve my problem. Trust me you aren't the only one having this problem. I know about 3 people with Canon printers that just went ahead and got a ip4000R and one just gave up.

Okay. Well that sucks.

Even the AirPort Extreme/Express?

Well since the Airport Express (not Extreme) has a USB port for printers I think it does work. WHY it works I have no idea but I have heard reports of Canon printers working that way. But it might be cheaper to just get a wireless (or wired) print server to use with it. IF that print server has USB. Even then I can't guarentee it will work. So I'd buy from some place with a good return policy.

Well thanks for the advice. If you remember how you got your PC to show up... let me know, just because I'm curious. I tried hooking up the printer to the G5 desktop as an alternate solution. The Powerbook could print wirelessly, but my PC still couldn't print (even though it could find and connect to the printer)... I tried with Bonjour as well with no luck. Oh well, I setup a shared "drop folder" on my PC desktop where I can drag files from the macs that I need to print. It was the best solution I could come up with. Thanks again for the help. Let me know if anybody has any other ideas... sounds like this printer just doesn't want to cooperate.

Just buy a cheap network print server like these ones. Stick your printer next to the router. It'll have its own ip address and you don't have to tie up one of the machines to act as a print server.

Similar but different issuye with an Epson Photo R300

I have a similar issue with a Epson Photo R300. In my case when the printrer is on the Mac running Tiger. In my case though I have Bonjour and can see the printer (actually with or without Bonjour) from an XP PC. The printer driver installs. The problem in this case is that it will not see the bidirectional printer communication, so it will not print to it. Printer is shared; windows sharing is on.

I can send files back and forth between the systems just fine... there is a Linksys router in the middle. And the prinetr will work on either the PC or the Mac as a standalone. The issue exists only across the network. I have also tried it in the other direction, but in that case, I can see the workgroup on the PC, but it does not showthe printer.

If anyone can assist with this one, I'd appreciate it.

What about the XP firewall?

A question: Is there a firewall running on the XP box? Either the crappy one that comes with service pack 2 or zonewall/norton firewall etc?

If so, and the firewall isn't configured to let MS sharing traffic through, then you're dead in the water until you open the firewall for that app.

Hi. I'm having similar problems, but mine's with an HP DeskJet 5652 on a USB port on XP. The step I'm stuck at is the very last one. It doesn't show the printer. Same problem I had before I installed Bonjour.

I'm able to share files back and forth, just can't get the bloody printer working from the Mac. I've downloaded HP's OSX drivers, and installed them on the Mac, but that didn't seem to help.

If I try using the "More Printers > Windows Printing" dialogue box and navigate to the PC, enter password etc, no printers show up.

If I try using the LPD and enter the Address and the Queue, my printer doesn't show up in the "Print Using" dropdown. It seems to only show me PostScript printers, and even has an option for "Generic PostScript Printer". But when I tried it, it caused my poor little HP to spit out reams of blank and garbled paper.

BUT............

They were talking! Clicking buttons on the Mac made the HP do stuff. It just didn't do anything human beings could interpret. Any thoughts? Please?

How do I get the IP Printer dialogue to see my printer? Or what am I missing here?

Cheers.

So ozx, you have a PC with a printer directly attached and a Mac on the same network. You'd like to be able to print to that printer from your Mac, right?

Has your PC been set up to share printers? I'm not near a PC at the moment and I haven't done it for ages, but it should be somewhere in the Printer settings in the Control Panel. If not, then maybe try the networking/file sharing section.
