Hi, I searched the forums but couldn't find an answer to this specific question:

I've ordered .Mac as a retail box and it's on its way. However, it just got delayed and won't be here for a week or so. I was told that there's nothing in the box except an activation code.

Can I start using .Mac if I sign up for a trial, and then when my box comes, I enter the code and upgrade to the full membership? Will this work, has anyone done it, or will it bugger something up -- I am specifically concerned that it won't allow me to continue using the same account name or email address.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Take the three month trial!

Then if you like it, at the END of the three months, use your code to RENEW that membership! It won't mess anything up and you have your 3 months free, plus your 1 year membership! If you don't like it then you can sell your retail code.

I'm glad you posted here before you used your code :)

Ok... what a good idea. I am glad I posted. The code doesn't time out or anything, does it? Do I definitely get to keep the account name / email address that I choose for the trial?

Yes, you can. I've always used a retail box from the first upgrade of the trial all the way to now... when you get your box through, log into your account, click to make a payment and enter the code. It may still ask for your card details but it won't charge you for it. Oh yeah, it'll add what's left of your 60 day trial onto your year.

So I don't even have to wait until the end of the trial to use my code, it will just add my trial days onto my paid year?

That's cool, so you won't lose time by entering the renewal code.

Your email and websites definitely won't change, there's nothing to worry about there.

Crap! I never thought of that. This is the first time I'm glade my MacBook hasn't arrived yet. I received my .Mac box in the mail last Friday. Its been sitting on my desk ever since. Nice! :D Thanks!

Yup... to be honest, you put in the code and then it will put through the 'renewal'/activation at the right time. I signed up for .Mac in January but my renewal date is March now :) The other good thing is that although it's still free - if there's any features only available to full .Mac members, you get the goodies for the whole period
