Ok so I am a diehard mac user, but for school I have to use a school issued hp laptop. They give it to us to use for the year and then we give it back. 95 percent of the kids at this school board, so they just use the school network all of the time. I live near by so I commute. What i want to know is if/how i can connect to my cable modem at home, but then be able to connect to my network at school. I bought a belkin wireless router and wirelss card on sale at staples today just because they were both a really good price. any tips would be really appreciated.

What exactly do you wan't to be able to access on the schools network?

If your talking about using the schools internet from your house, thats not going to happen.

no, i wanna be able to plug my laptop in during class and use the internet at school, but then also be able to connect to MY wireless network when i am at home. I have comcast high speed, and a wireless router and know how to set all of that up, my question is if i will need to have different settings to access my network than the ones to access it at school, and if so how do i set it up to do both.sorry should have been more clear

Go to My Computer, then to controll panel. Then choose either network connections or wireless network connections. You should see your schools network option on there, it will probably be the only one. Then click create a new network connection. Then check which ever one you want.

I have not done this in a while and am just going off of memory so I hope this is right.

T.S.

unless any of your two wireless network is password protected, windows will automatically connect to it. you don;t need to do anything.

well im almost positive that my school network is password protected. does that mean i have to manually do it each time. if so its not a big problem just wondering.

if its a secured network, it will ask you for WEP when it first try to connect, just like on a MAC, you can choose to remember the key, it won't ask you again.

WEP stands for Wired Equivalent Protection (Or something along the lines of that). It's a huge string of characters you need on a computer to access a network. It's like a password. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong)

oh dear, just remember, for multiple network switching (wireless or not), its very much same for windows and mac, dont worry about it, post back when you got the computer and have any problem.

yeah so i think im just gonna have to go to the school computer guy. first off before i broke the wrapping on my wireless router and card, i just unhooked the ethernet cable from my imac and plugged it into the back of my laptop. didnt work. and i dont have administrative privledges so i cant go into my computer and add another network. i hate when they set stuff up like this. what good is a computer without the internet. o well thanks for all the help. just another reason that i will never buy a pc
