My dad just ordered a 20" iMac (intel). It is his first Mac ever that will be replacing his aged Windows machine. I want to get him something to mark the occasion but can't decide what. I am stuck between .Mac (I am sure he will enjoy iWeb and would probably want to post movies and pictures) and the $99 M-Audio USB Keyboard for use with Garage Band (he always plays with the app when on my Mac so I know he will enjoy it). I am open to other suggestions as well. Thanks.

.Mac is a gift that keeps on costing. Since he will have to pay for it in future years I would let him make the decision. On the other hand, for anyone who can play, a keyboard makes Garage Band hugely more fun. That is what I would get him. Best wishes.

I say the keyboard. In Garageband, he can continue to have fun forever....no renewal cost, etc. Let him try the .Mac trial to see if he really likes it or not.

If you are desparate to spend 99 bucks, Apple has recently presented a leather case that is REALLY a bang for the buck :D

I vote for .mac. Making it so easy to post photos is one of the best features of the whole Mac package (Mac + .Mac). He can choose whether it's worth it in future years.

The "keeps on costing" argument that emptyCup makes above is true, as it is for magazine subscriptions and Netflix memberships, both of which I've bought people as gifts, but since they aren't required to keep it up, nobody has minded these gifts. You're giving a year's worth, that's all, and for a new Mac user that seems worthwhile.

Thanks everyone. I totally forgot about the 3 month .Mac trail. I think it is something my dad should try before either of us spends the money.

I'd buy him a piece of software from a small Mac developer. Show him some cool software and support the community. :)

Well, if you already know he'll enjoy it, I'd go for that one. Let him use .Mac trial at first. Still, iGary's suggestion for "Missing Manual for Tiger" is great. I am a recent switcher and that book has been a great help.
