Mac0S 11.3.1 download failed - said internet issue - How do I start download again from scratch?

Hi All,



Summary:
M1 MBA

Start: Said 6.6Gb to download.

Failed to download and install over night

Now: Says 5.7Gb to download.



Question:
I want to start from scratch, and download the whole 6.6Gb cleanly in one go.
I am apprehensive about just installing the incremental 5.7Gb left
I also do not want to wipe the MBA and start again. I just want to restart the update process from scratch again.


How do I reset the update process, to start a clean download of the 6.6Gb again?



NB: Error this morning:
“....Failed to download... check your internet...”

OS update install 11.3.1x GB? Sounds like 11.3 nor ready for primetime. Embarrassing what is the rush? Really crowds the work space on 256GB drive!

Mine was only 3.6GB but it failed the first time. I just started from scratch again and it worked on the second try. A few days ago 11.3 failed twice for me and finally worked on the third try.

This is on a brand new Macbook Air M1. Apple is getting worse and worse in these matters.

I should have said, I have not downloaded the 1.3.0 version….

I was waiting for the x.1

perhaps that why my required download is so much! 😀

You could try booting into safe mode and going from there. It's worked for me in similar cases.

Yes, whole thing needed downloading!

Hi All,


Restarted the MBA, and checked the update again. I get the below message.
It looks like I did actually get a full download the other night.
I did a full time machine backup since then, and have some time to play with the machine tonight hopefully.


Am I good to simply hit 'INSTALL' now?
Or is it better to try and download the whole lot again, without any error messages this time?

Hi all,


I finally had a chance to call apple support about this.

20 minutes on the call. The Rep could not find the download on the laptop etc.

....She did the same thing as me and assumed the 'update now' button mean't 'install now'

In the end, she said ok, no duff partial download on laptop, lets just hit that button and see what happens....

The install started from scratch again, the full 6.6gb to be downloaded again. Phew!

We left it at that. I will try the update again overnight!

For future reference: should be able to re-start the download via the App Store. Go there, search for Big Sur, "Get". And should then get the full installer. You will see the usual System Settings update screen as above doing the download.

(Did this the other day to install the update to an external boot volume I maintain)

Hi all,

Good news, I finally got macOS 11.3.1 to load.
Took 4 attempts in the end, and 2 calls to apple care.


attempt 1: internet error, stopped at 5.7gb - landline broadband
attempt 2: internet error, stopped at 5.7gb - landline broadband
attempt 3: internet error, stopped at 5.7gb - mobile hotspot
attempt 4: Finally fully downloaded and installed ok.



The issue:
Part way through the download a pop up occurs asking for a password, as per the below screenshot.
For attempt 4 - I noticed this as looked at MBA every so often during download.
