In case anybody was interested I see provantage.com has the external DVD drive for the Macbook Air for about $70.00. I show it listed on Dealmac.com.

Is there any advantage getting the Mac DVD drive over another brand. I have an old IBM external DVD drive and it is not much bigger than the Mac version.
I don"t think mine writes to dual layer disks though.

As the previous poster said, you can use any external USB DVD. There are plenty much cheaper than the Apple Superdrive.

Are you sure because the rev a and b couldn't take another external.

You are completely wrong. I had Rev B and I used an HP external DVD drive that I bought from Target. Worked perfectly, just plug and play.

No, I'm not 100% sure. I just deduced from my experience with my 2004 iBook and its ability to use an external ODD via USB and that the USB ODD should be nothing more than an external device for Mac OS X, though it will look for signs what actual device that is I guess.

Hmm, why would Apple do that? Greedy bastards.

Calm down tiger! Jesus!
I said "are you sure" meaning ... are you sure? It was a question and fwiw, I plugged another DVD drive into my Rev B and it wouldn't recognize.

Again, a question, come down off the tower dude.

It's honestly you that's on your tower. It wasn't that you questioned him, you made a completely incorrect statement as if it was fact. You calm down with the defensiveness. I should've known better than to correct the almighty queen of MR.
