I'm looking to buy an ultra-light macbook for travel, to be exclusively used for web browsing, emails, and itunes. Do not anticipate doing any real work on it. Any views on whether I'd be better off going with a macbook 12' or ipad 11' w/ magic keyboard?

The iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard is perfectly fine your use case, especially if you have a primary computer running a desktop/laptop OS.

Personally, I have both but I love the super thin and lighter weight Retina Macbook 12" from 2015 I have.
The iPad Pro I have gets rarely travelled as it is more fragile with it's unprotected screen vs. Macbook.

For me, the 12" Macbook is a better traveler on planes and has storage for movies that have been copied from USB, streaming download, and DVD copies..
Plus it doubles as a work computer just in case although I try not to work when I go on vacation.

There isn’t any real right answer here. Have you used an iPad extensively before? Some people get along great with them, others not at all. I had a 12” MacBook for a while when it first came out and iPads were not progressing as fast as I wanted. When the iPad Pro with keyboard and Pencil came out, I went back to iPads and gave the MacBook to my wife. For casual use, I much prefer the flexibility of an iPad. My wife has never caught on, even though she’s on her phone all day long. If you don’t care about the touch interface, and don’t care about the Pencil, I’d go MacBook.
