Hey,

I use Macbook Pro 13 inch Mid 2012 with Mojave.

I had it on overnight and the next morning when i started it took more time than usual to start it up. When it went past the loading screen and into the OSX the finder crashed together with Avast virus.

This is what i have tried with no luck so far

1. Used disk utility and first aid on harddrive with no errors found.

2. Resetted SMC.

3. Resetted NVRAM.

4. Uninstalled Avast .

5. Tried to enter safe mode but it stucks on 100% loading screen.

6. Tried to restart it several times with NVRAM reset and then it is possible to see the login screen on OSX but it crashes on login screen.

7. Those few times i have managed to login to my OS it takes 10 minute to open applications.

What can be the issue in this case?

Is it possible to reinstall OSX if I do not have time machine activated and ensure that only OSX gets installed without it deleting my own files like music, documents on the harddrive?

How much free space do you have on the internal drive?

Can you successfully boot from an external drive that has macOS installed on it or a macOS USB installer?
Your problem could be the internal SATA cable to the drive that has degraded due to age. Booting successfully from an external drive would be a clue that the SATA cable is not performing properly.

It could be a macOS problem, but trying to install a fresh macOS could have problems if your hardware has a problem. Normally you can install the current macOS on top of you current system, but since you are having problems there could be loss of data. Having a backup is important if you do not want to lose data if the install fails.

Coastal's "how much free space do you have left" question is a good one...
