Macbook A Little Too Hot!!

I know that macbooks do get hot when running, and in since i got mine in february the highest i have seen the cpu temperature go is about 65'c...which i still thought was a little warm.

but today when only 3 programs (itunes,mercury messenger and roller coaster tycoon 3) the temperature reached 86'c.

so i was wondering if temperatures as high as 86 can damage it internally, and if i should just ignore it and carry on use or talk to apple about it? and im also curious as to how many other people have seen the temperatures get this high and if anyone has seen higher?

btw, my macbook is the 2ghz, 1gbram, superdrive version if it makes any difference of not!

Mine hits temperatures like that occasionally and the fans go into overdrive. I've found that occasionally it's because an application or process has crashed.

You can check Activity Monitor and see if anything's crashing.

This seems high. I've run some pretty intense applications and I've never gone over 70 C. It looks like both fans are working so I'm not sure what the issue is.

If you run any other games, what does the temperature max out at? Try to do some really intense gaming or processing and see what temperatures you get. If other games/applications mimic the temps you're getting, then you may have a problem internally. That's just my opinion, however.
 
86 degrees isn't anything to worry about in term of hardware damage as long as it's not that hot all the time.
 
i would suggest that you download a program called icyclone, which allows you to change your fan speed of the main fans. its very handy and it allows you to keep the heat down if it goes really hot.
 
Heating problems on Windows..

Is there any way to write some code to start the fans on a MBP from the Windows version via Bootcamp? That would solve the overheating problem..

You can't say "only 3 programs" when one of them is a 3D game (I assume it's 3D). Those usually make your cpu run at full throttle, which in turns causes it to produce more heat.
 
wow 86C !!! I was running something similar on my mbp yesterday (adium, safari, itunes, preview and quicktime) pretty much everything to test it out and i got a big 56 pluged and 51 unpluged... battery is perfectly normal and keep its charge : 4h15 with wireless internet on plus other programs running. (better battery life settings of course)

That being said i dont know how i achieve this. the only thing i did is calibrating the battery.

my mbp runs really cool, mainly because i have it raised up about 2 cm on a box thingo that i cut out of a lid. |_____| <<it looks like that, with the lappy on the top. if im gaming or something i have a fan behind it that i turn on. just to circulate the heat. running the cpu at 90% constantly (folding) it will easily keep down to about 45-50 degrees (with battery taken out). the battery ads a few more degrees.fan speed is just chilling on 1000rpm
 
My MacBook runs around 60º with fans below 2,000rpm usually, then the other night I downloading via Apple's site a widget called something like AirTraffic Control for viewing info on WiFi signals and on loading the fans shot to 7,000rpm+ temp. went to 85º+ and CPU usage was 100%!!

i couldnt get my airtraffic control to work, so i gave up on it. it wouldnt find anything. did it actually shoot all those things up or was it like a glitch?

All was normal, I loaded the widget to help leach a neighbours WiFi, and all hell kicked off. Deleted the widget and everything returned to normal.

oh how wierd is that.. like 2 minutes ago i realised that this fan speed thingo was doing almost the same thing, using up resources. i closed it and reopened it and it seems to be ok so far. neway im off to bed might catchya round some time :)

i tried running some pretty intensive programs... aperture, converting a video in quicktime, itunes, safari and mail and it did not get any hotter than 65'c.

so i tried running the game again it went upto 80'c. it was then i noticed in activity monitor that the game is made for PPC and not intel. so i decided to see if it was this or the graphics that was making it get hot, by running the only other PPC program i have... microsoft word.

I didnt think it would be as bad as the game but it went upto 88'c!! so it appears that its ppc prgrams that makes it so hot, although there was still 35% of the cpu and ram available still and the fans were not even at full speed!


I also noticed when writing this that microsoft comes up as a spelling mistake, made me laugh!:D

Those programs aren't always using CPU, where as most games and rosetta use quite a lot of CPU a lot of the time.

Get MenuMeters so you can see your CPU usage constantly.
