My MacBook Air 13" arrived today. It's the 4GB, 1.86GHz, 128 GB configuration.

I have been hesitant to fully embrace it replacing my current MacBook Pro 15" mainly because I was worried about the smaller screen size...

But wow.. Now that it has arrived.. I have played with it for last 7 hours or so, it has done everything I've thrown at it perfectly.

Noise. It is very silent... The fan, even at max volume doesn't make a motor noise, it's just wind moving... In my opinion it doesn't sound annoying at all. Also the fan revs up and down quite fast, not like the older MacBooks which take quite some time to get to the highest setting and then even longer to get down to silent again... If it has hard stuff to do it might rev up a bit and then when the load is gone its completely silent again within 10 seconds... I really love that.

Heat. It has none of the problems my previous MBPs all had. It doesn't get uncomfortably hot on its bottom anymore, you can have it on your lap even when you're pushing it..

Lightness / Size / Mobility. When I took it out (even though its the 13") of its packaging, I was shocked at how small it was. But you get used to it within minutes and since the keyboard and the trackpad are full size you don't have issues with it at all. It's really great. Being able to hold it at one of its edges while its open, waving it around, with no effort whatsoever is also great. Also the body is really sturdy, it doesn't flex at all, it doesn't bend, nothing... It's rock solid. I have tried this out especially because of the reports of failing logic boards and some people thought that might be due to flexing it, but no - at least on the 13" the casing is really strong..

Perceived Speed. It really shines in this area. It does anything you wanna do blazingly fast, even when the CPU is at max, programs still start very fast - I'm really happy with the performance. I've had Windows 7 installing 56 updates (in Parallels), was running Time Machine, was checking Disk Usage with Daisy Disk, and played a 1080p movie stutter-free in Plex, all at the same time - it had no problems whatsoever doing that.

The experience I've had in these first hours so far has been mindblowing, it's hands down the best laptop I have ever had, and I don't say these things usually... It's really really great.

If any of you want me to try out anything for you or you have questions, feel free to ask! I can do advanced things too ;)

Agreed on all points. Plus, while the MBA is light, it's unibody construction makes it feel solid as a rock. Other small notebooks feel like junk in comparison.

My Air with the same configuration arrived yesterday and I have to wholeheartedly agree with you. I also had a 15 MBP and the weight difference is quite noticeable when carrying the Air around.

I had a Rev A Air when it first came out and I ended up selling it after a couple of months due to the heat and noise but this new model is the bomb. IMHO this is the best notebook that Apple has produced and I've owned every generation of the macbook/macbook pro/air at one point or another since the 15.2 Powerbook.

I've never wanted an Apple laptop more than the Rev D MBAs... so glad I gave in to the temptation. This is indeed the best thing since sliced bread! My 15" MBP is now history - hopefully its new owner will treat it well.

I too ADORE my air!

I was so happy when the rev D's came out because I knew they'd be able to handle most of my workflow and portability was key so I grabbed one.

Right now I am using it to build video game levels in Unity. Its great to be able to lay in bed, pull my 3D assets off of my tower over the network, and prototype a level. No more long days only at the desk. (The long days are still there, just not in my desk chair :p )

Anyway I love it and couldn't be happier with it!

Got mine today as well and I'm really enjoying it. This is my first Mac and I have never worked on one in the past so there is definitely a learning curve. I took the liberty of downloading iStat Menu, Appcleaner, and VLC along with programs I used on my PC. So far so good...

I've been using it fairly constantly for the last 3 1/2 hours and still show 2 1/2 left before the battery dies. My PC would have been dead LONG AGO.....

I re-formatted out of the box and gained 5GB on the SSD off the bat and I'm in the process of calibrating the battery.

The only problem I'm having now is connecting to the file sharing on my PC. I can't seem to get the address to work on the Mac. I can see my Mac shared folder just fine on my PC....

Command-K in Finder. Go to SMB:://<PC-IP-address>/<share-name>

Also set up your Windows workgroup name in the System Preferences - Network - Advanced - WINS tab.

You still won't see newer PCs show up though - Microsoft changed something in Windows 7 (and maybe Vista) that isn't quite backward compatible, unless you force the MBA (or an XP PC) to be a Master Brower.

I've tried putting the address of my shared folder into the bar several times and it still doesn't work. I will try the workgroup setup tomorrow and see if that changes anything. I have a 4 year old PC running Vista so I don't think I will have to worry about the Master Browser route, at least I hope not.

There is a fan in the new MBA's?

Never heard it, and never had the heat issues with a nice burn scar I have from falling asleep watching Hulu one night with my MBP.

My new MBA 13" rocks for the things I do. Did a Keynote presentation on it and it seemed quicker than my old MBP unit did the same duty with.

how did you reformat your new Macair

Lonnytik said he reformatted the disk and gained an extra 5 gigs of space.
I would be interested in knowing how this was done and what programs did you remove. Did you use special software?

agree on all accounts. this is the best laptop i have ever owned, and if i didn't have a ridiculously beefed up Mac Pro, this would be my favorite computer i've ever owned. it still might be....

Maybe it was the printer drivers?

Kiteflyer....I followed the reformat guide on the front page shown here:

http://guides.macrumors.com/Complete_Steps_to_Perform_a_Clean_OS_X_Reinstall_on_Your_MacBook_Air

To be accurate, I gained a full 5 GB because iLife was not installed. In actuality you will only gain roughly 2GB if you remove the language translations. The only iLife program I won't use is Garageband(1GB) so you can get about 3GB if you go that route based upon my experience.

Maybe it was the printer drivers?

I left the printer drivers....don't know if I will ever need them so I would rather just keep them for now. I have the 128GB SSD and don't see me filling that up anytime soon so there's no need to delete the printer drivers.

You can use programs like CleanMyMac to remove all the unnecessary languages and the PowerPC aspect of universal binaries from your installed applications... It can probably get out a few gigs or something, especially when you have many apps installed...

Best Config for 13 MBAir?

Hi there,

I'm new to Macs...and I'm sold on the new MBAir. But I was wondering if you guys could help me determine the best config/specs for ordering the MBAir. I will be using it for regular stuff like browsing, photos, movies...but will be multi tasking a lot (ie a lot of windows open). So, I want to ensure I don't have any slow downs, or sluggish performance....So, for example would be upgrading to 4g of RAM be a must or can i get away with 2? I will be sticking with the 128 gb ...as I don't need the 256 gb of space.

So, any thoughts on the best setup for the 128gb model (it only seems to come in the 1.8 processor for the 128 gb...not sure why 2.13 is not an option...only if you get 256 gb?? :(

Thanks for your help...and I'm looking forward to my MAC experience

Cheers!

I would think the 1.86 4GB 128GB would be fine for you (unless you need more storage...then upgrading to the 256 would make sense)...

I love my MBA 13 Ultimate, it is the BEST laptop I have ever had:)

I am using it with PS and LR 3.3 and find it fast enough to handle all my photo needs. LR and PS run great on my laptop.

Here is picture I took today and processed on my MBA.

True, the 2.13GHz processor is available only on the 256GB model. I'd suggest going for 4GB if you are going to multitask a lot. If you don't need 256GB, then the 1.86GHz 4GB 128GB model is likely sufficient.
