Hi guys, I'm new here in the site , always been a fan of this site and hopes one day to buy my first macbook air.
I run an old windows xp computer that I bought last 2006 , it still works though but it has had it bumps over the years, replacing parts or repairs every year. It's quite noisy and it sounds like an electric fan.
These are the specs on my old windows pc >
intel pentium4 2.66ghz
1.5gb DDR1 Memory ram
nvidia geforce fx 550 256mb ( can't handle modern games even on low settings )
40gb harddisk ( my harddisk is almost full but I can always store my data online or via external usb drive )
Windows XP SP 2
The work that I do mostly is :
Web / Screen Design - A larger resolution is very important on designing web mockups or for extra screen estate for tools / panels in the adobe cs5 programs. To give you an example, i used an old monitor 1024 x 768 before nov 2010 and I updated it with a samsung led monitor, it now has 1600 x 900, and I would say it has helped me become a better designer , I can see different panels and the canvas on the center. The 1400 x 900 display is a step down but its only 200 pixels, or I could always attach it to my new monitor.
Probably the biggest problem is when I design a template that has a lot of layers or filters that have been activated or a application skin like 1900 x 1080 ( with 150 dpi ). My can handle it , but sometimes I get out of memory problems.
Print/Design - I don't do a lot of print design as of now, but I'm hoping with the new macbook air, I can design better for catalogs/brochures, tarpaulines like 5 x 7 feet in 300 dpi. Designing a business card in 300 dpi in my old pc is quite frustrating, I can get the job done but its too slow.
Surf / Watch Videos / Light Gaming :
In my old pc, when i have like 7 tabs opened in firefox, and i work in fireworks ( with big file size ) + skype, i had to close the browser to allow more memory in fireworks. I don't do a lot of gaming since i have an xbox360, but I might try some "game demos" , but this would only be tried once in a blue moon.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not really demanding when it comes to hardware specs, or a uber fast laptop, all I want is to increase my production speed to 2x or more, then I would be happy.
1.) So my question is, based on my old pc specs and the things that I do , will the current 13inch macbook air ultimate be a better experience for me? Granting me a 2x or 3x speed increase in my work ?
2.) Is there a big difference from my 1.5ghz ddr1 ram and geforce fx 256 mb videocard to the ones used in the macbook air ? 2x or 3x maybe ?
3.) The new macbook air models will be launched in june, with new sandybridge processors. If the processors would get updated , but with the graphics card downgraded , will it affect performance in adobe cs5 programs? Should I even wait to buy in June?
Hope you guys can help me out, thanks !
