My MBA 2014 recently becomes black screen during start up. I can hear the startup sound and the apple logo glows. But the screen just blackened. Then I connected an external monitor and the external monitor also has black screen. Could anyone advise what is happening to my MBA? Thank you.

No video to external display is a very bad sign. Not simply a screen problem and likely fault on logic board (could specifically be Intel 5000 GPU). If my guess is right then not worth repair.

I recommend taking it to the apple store for disagnosis if it's under warranty.

If it's not under warranty, I would take it to an Apple repair shop and see if they can fix it for a reasonable price.
