Most stores only have the base models in stock, and additional configurations can only be ordered online. On these forums though there were a few people who heard from Apple Stores that they will carry the 4GB models as well. Best thing you can do is call a few of the stores and ask them, that way you'll know for sure.

You said it , but actually i am in Italy so it's complicated to call a store. There are not many chance until i'll be in the city.
The question could be put on other way: are 4GB necessary, for an average student usage?

Not ccomplicated at all. These days you can indeed make international calls. Just get the non 1-800 number from the web... And remember the 5h time difference to NYC. So if you are home at 9pm its nice 3 pm here. And - the 5th avenue store is open 24/7 so you can even call when you are getting up, will be less busy.

Or you order online and have it fast shipped where ever you are staying.

The 5th Ave store in Midton Manhattan has plenty of model Mac Book Airs and also plenty of base model to sell, but they don't have nay 4GB models. I spoke to the Apple Sales Guy, he said they would be getting shipments next week (Friday-Saturday ish) of 4GB models.
