So I updated my MiL's Macbook Air that she uses for work to Catalina. It's a model A1466 and is supported by Catalina.
It updated perfectly, no problem. But after restarting it gives me a white circle with a white line through it - meaning this Mac does not support this OS.

What the ******!?

This Mac is supported by the latest version of Catalina, Catalina was downloaded from the App store and downloaded/installed absolutely fine. I was using it after the update. What is going on and how on Earth am I going to fix this?

Maybe this will help.

Thank you, I contacted Apple Support and tried those steps, still won't work.
Christ Apple, there's no stores open in over 100 miles due to this stupid nothingburger of a virus and the ones that are open over 100 miles away don't have a slot available for over a week.

Try to reset the PRAM. Start your mac with option+cmd+P+R keys pressed, let it chime two or three times and see if it boots.

What failed exactly? Could you boot into Recovery Mode with command-key R-key?

It could be that your flash storage is starting to fail. Another thing I would suggest is try running diagnostics by restarting the computer while pressing the D-key.

Do you have a backup of the computer user data using Time Machine? If all other things you try fail, you might need to erase the flash and do a clean install and migrate the user data from a backup.

Here we go... the "bricked" definition police...

Normally that sign means that it can't find the System to Boot. Booting into Recovery and reinstalling it might help and if that partition isn't available, then Internet recovery should help.
Because not being bricked is not being bricked. I never ask for a person to give the definition after that they state it wrong, it is just don't state it wrong to begin with to get attention.

One may call it, a nothingburger brick, it could go away in about a week.

Either way, nothing or not, I would take the steps mentioned above with properly resetting PRAM and SMC witha solid reboot after each one.
Run a hardware test just to rule out an immediate drive failure or RAM issue.... stranger things have caused that ghostbuster symbol so it is difficult to rule it out exactly until you can rule it out.
If hardware all passes, there are some essentially first aid style tests you can do in Terminal from Recovery Mode.

My main go to would have macOS on an external drive that is large enough to copy over ALL data if necessary. Boot to the external, then check if the internal drive even shows up in Finder.
For me, if it does, then I run CarbonCopyCloner and clone that entire drive, 2ndly, just simply copy any Apps, Documents, Photos, Music, Movies, anything of importance off of the potentially trash drive.

Once all data has been copied over and verified that it is actually moved and usable. Do a erase disk from Terminal to wipe that entire internal drive/it's partitions and everything out. Then let whichever version of macOS you want to use, rebuild how it wants. See if the machine boots on it's own, update to latest and verify things work prior to moving any sensitive data back. But still keep the data that was backed up, put a sticker or tape on that drive with the date, file it away in a cabinet, drawer, or closet.

Call it a day, it'll be done in less than a week, shouldn't have to be shipped off, and can be done while watching TV with the rest of the fam if that's a thing ya'll enjoy.

Reset PRAM and SMC, nothing.

The only thing that restored the Mac was reformatting the SSD and installing Sierra.
Pretty disappointed in Apple, this is a 2015 MBA that refuses to update now.

If I remember correctly, the firmware needs to be updated which occurred with High Sierra in order for APFS to work as boot format. Sierra would still be on HFS+ which would not properly update to Catalina without the firmware update.

According to the document below it states you need at least Mavericks to update to Catalina. I would think Catalina would be able to update the firmware to support APFS.

@827538 I just realized this is your second thread regarding updating your MBA to Catalina.

Is there a way to update the firmware? I tried updating from Sierra to High Sierra and it bricked it again.
