I have a PC right now that is way too slow to edit videos on and I’m looking at getting a Mac. I don’t have a huge budget, and I like everything I’ve read about the MacBook Air so far. I’m looking at the 2017 13”. I would be using it for university, like writing papers and doing online research, as well as editing GoPro videos. I have the Hero5 and I sometimes take videos in 4K. I don’t care if it’s not the fastest machine while editing videos, (I’d rather spend less money and be a little patient). I plan on buying a large external hard drive to keep my videos and other stuff on. I would like to know a) if the MacBook Air can handle basic video editing and how slow it would be b) if the MacBook Air can handle editing 4K video c) if I should upgrade to the i7 processor d) and if I should upgrade to the 256gb or 512gb SSD.

Thanks!

It's possible, but you'd need to convert the codecs into something more friendly, like ProRes. You'd also want to be using proxies.

If you're looking at upgraded configs, you may be better served with a MacBook or an entry-level MacBook Pro, since with the i7 upgrade and the SSD upgrade, the price of the Air goes a lot higher than it's worth, and I personally already think the base price is a lot higher than it's worth, considering it's relatively old hardware that hasn't been upgraded for quite a while
