The screens are bad (at least most of them). Hopefully you will get one without them. I went through several, plus looked at about 8 between two different apple stores and only 1 had a good screen.

but surely apple realise that this is an issue now. Any advice if the replacement screen has these grey lines. Can i ask for a macbook as a replacement instead or is there no chance of that either ? Thanks for advice.

just got the macbook air back today with replaced screen. It still has grey lines. They wouldn't replace it in the store. They started giving me this crap about how these lines are a particular feature of the air model. It's an absolute disgrace. I'm going to try selling the air on ebay. I don't think i'll ever be able to buy another apple product again even though i love the operating system.

LOL The lines are a particular feature of the Air? Holy hell! Why did they replace it then in the first place?

Ok, I never had the lines and I guess some people did. I've seen a few Airs in store and my buddy's Air is absent of them. However, I understand people saw them and that's ok. But for Apple to replace a screen then say it's a feature is a douche bag way of doing business. What you need to do is call Apple Customer Care and tell them that you find it humorous at best that they would replace a screen for a defect and then tell you when the replacement was not up to par that it is a 'feature'.

Sorry to hear about your MBA.
However, I have not heard about this grey lines thing. And I'm a bit concerned because I'm trying to decide between a MBA (waiting for rev. C) or MB (Al unibody). And I've just heard that UMB got updated with the same screen as MBA ones.
So, will this both have the grey lines thing? Which is the incidence of such defect?

The screen issue is one that I am familiar with as mine does exhibit the behavior (or my eyes/brain believes it does) from time to time under the right conditions. It is a bit annoying (esp. given what apple charges for these things), but I really do enjoy using this machine vs. the other alternatives in the Mac lineup. There are some theories that it is caused by undervolting the panel (which might mean the panel models -- 9C90 and 9C9A -- that exhibit this behavior on the MBAs would function perfectly on the MBs assuming they have more spare juice and that they have found a panel that works more reliably on the MBAs as some have had good luck with the 9C8F variant, iirc).

I think it's a good thing that Apple has decided to update the panels on the MacBooks. The problem is even with some examples of that in the pipeline, there is no guarantee that all new MBs will be made this or that when you go and buy one you will end up with one with the screen (think of the scope of their operation and inventory, etc).

I cannot speak to the incidence. You can look back through the history in this forum, which is not a scientifically significant nor likely representative sample of Apple's customers (the people tend to be more savvy and either more embittered or smitten :) ). In some people's experience it has been quite high. Others have seen only perfect MBAs everywhere they look.

i was just talking to customer relations there. They are going to investigate with the store and get back to me tomorrow. I would take anything now even a refurb macbook with a decent screen. I think it's disgusting that apple are ignoring this issue when clearly the problem is widespread. I have to say that i think its an issue with the graphics or power supply to the led display. Surely all the screens can't be crap.

They are not ignoring it internally that's for sure. They're just publicly stonewalling the issue, and palming us, the masses, off with inferior tech.

Gone are the days when Apple would issue recalls for QC as opposed to just safety/power issues. Ironically, these days they're much better able to actually afford to do this. Beancounters rules I guess.

The switch in MB screen shows that they accepted the criticism of the old screen being a POS. But then the MB is their biggest seller, so it makes sense to 'protect' that product line from accusations of inferiority. The MBA however does not show up as a significant line on their sales charts, either current or forecast, so safe to assume they don't give a rat's rear end about fixing it within this revision. Not even as if it's a complicated power issue to be resolved - that may be the cause, but the fact remains that one screen model - the 9C8F - widely used in the rev.A and some early rev.B's is reportedly line-free. Don't think there's been one example cited here on MR to the contrary.
