Many people are comparing the newly released M1 MacBooks with their maxed out 16” or decked gaming rig, and saying how the M1 is not that great. But imo people forgot the direct Intel MacBook Air that the M1 replaced. This is a great video showing them side by side. In short, it’s quite amazing. Even if the M1 only gave better battery life without fan, it’s already amazing. The performance boost is like a really nice and huge cherry on top. :D

I like his channel, but he can be a bit excited on potential. This is actually a very good video for him.

The Apple Silicon Macs have me excited. I’m teetering on buying a MacBook Pro with M1 to replace my base MacBook Pro 16. Conference calls shouldn’t cause my MacBook Pro to sound like it’s trying to leave the planet with it’s fan.

This is a good video for like for like comparison. It would be better if it was in Fahrenheit. But still good especially since the M1 has no fan

What’s amazing is how well the M1 MacBook Air compares not only to the Ice Lake MacBook Air, but also the 4-port Ice Lake MacBook Pro that Apple still sells. Sure, the 4-port model has advantages (such as supporting 2 external displays, and having 2 more Thunderbolt ports), but even the M1 Air has a GPU that is twice as fast. The battery life on the Air is impressive, and of course the fanless design is super quiet.

Literally replaced my MBP 2017 15" fully loaded with a MBA M1 16/1TB and I'm all over the MacRumors forums raving about how incredible this laptop is. I've had SO many Apple computers since 68040 days and this is incredible. Apple is pushing into the future with these M1's.

Wow I don’t know how I missed the fact that both the M1 MBA and M1 MBP 13” can only connect one external display... that’s kind of a bummer. I don’t really care about 4K+ displays - would be nice to at least be able to connect two lower res displays with the primary display off. Wonder if this is something that could change with a software update... Oh well, not a deal-breaker.

I think it’s a limitation of the IO. M1 certainly has the horsepower to handle multiple displays. Apple will undoubtedly address that in the higher end Macs.

Yeah I don’t exactly understand why it should be a limitation. It has two USB 4.0 ports, and you should be able to daisy chain two displays regardless. Do you think there’s any chance they could allow for two displays later by firmware update? I guess obviously it’s speculation at this point, but this genuinely surprises me.

Much less powerful machines can run two displays, as long as we aren’t talking giant 6K ones or whatever lol... For those of us who just want to occasionally connect a couple of modest displays to have more desktop space, this is quite a bummer.

Remember these chips were originally designed for mobile devices. The iPad Pro supports only 1 external display. Perhaps Apple thought it would be too much effort to build in additional IO, or there were too many trade offs with the other functionality they wanted to add to M1.

I didn’t find a comparison yet between standard mike input of MBP 16 and MBP M1. I do online workshops with Bluejeans and always get compliments that the mikes of the MBP 16 are good.

As soon as Apple adds the 2020 Airs to the Trade In program, I'll be trading in my i3 Air for an M1 MBA. That video answered my questions about the performance differences between the two machines.

It's likely that this is a hardware limitation. If it was something that could be done in firmware, they'd already have done it.
People are reporting that the M1 can drive multiple monitors using DisplayLink. It's a bit slower than a direct connection, so not good for video, games etc. but otherwise it could be a workable solution.

I did basically the same thing though went for a 512gb/8gb model to replace my 2017 15" MBP. I am amazed how this little thing performs compared to the big older 'high end' laptop. Even considering the 'new Mac' feeling I've never experienced a Mac which is so responsive, and the keyboard is wonderful. Not having it sound like a jet aircraft when doing machine learning is nice, and unlike my last fanless Mac (a 12" MacBook) this thing can actually handle statistics in R/RStudio without slowing down to molasses.

I haven't been this happy to use a Mac since the PowerPC days.

Oh and Rosetta 2 is seriously impressive.

Most of the world doesn't understand fahrenheits. It's only really the US that still uses archaic units like fahrenheits. ounces, hogheads, cups, firkins, yards, leagues etc.
Someone mentioned that the reviewer may be Canadian, which could be why he's using normal Celsius measurements.

I must have missed this... The new M1 machines can't have more than one external monitor?! I use a StarTech dock connected via Thunderbolt. I have two external displays connected to the dock with my current 2019 MPB. Would be a total deal breaker for me not to have two external monitors (my Mac remains in clamshell mode most of today). Is my understanding correct?

Yes, the current M1 MacBook Air and Pro are limited to the internal display and one external display through Thunderbolt (even in clamshell mode). You can AirPlay to a wireless display in addition to the physically connected displays. So unless one of your monitors supports wireless, you’ll have to wait for a future model to keep running both your external displays.

Thank you. Saved me some upgrade $$$. Definitely will need to wait for a future model. Maybe they will upgrade that webcam by then as well!

Nope. To be fair, Fahrenheit is scarcely older than Celsius in the scheme of things. Gold is still measured in ounces the world over.

I spend my money very carefully. Very carefully. When it’s time to get a new machine I’m running to the Apple store for an AS Mac. Not walking. Running.

there are several aftermarket boxes that do just that. I have a SIIG box attached to my M1 Mac mini and have three screens running with different desktops on each.
