MacBook Air M1 - any successful clamshell 4k monitor setups? What adapter do you use?

Hello all, my new MacBook Air m1 (1TB,16GB) is about to be returned unless someone on macrumors can throw me (and probably others) a Hail Mary. I am having continued issues with wake from sleep (since 11.0) and as of 11.1, I'm now having strange coloration issues. My setup is a MacBook Air in clam shell <> hyper drive usb-c 4k 60hz adapter <> Dell 4k 32" monitor. when the monitor is open, there are no coloration issues.

Does anyone have a flawless setup w/ no wake from sleep issues while using your m1 in clamshell mode with a 4k 60hz monitor? If so, what adapter are you using? thanks!

I have a 24" 4K LG monitor (24UD58B). I use it with a Belkin USB-C to HDMI adapter in clamshell mode on my MacBook Air and it works pretty consistently. Every once in a while I get noise on wake from sleep. I don't know if this has been fixed with macOS 11.1 or not but I haven't seen it since updating but it was always rare.

So, this monitor works with USB-C to HDMI but it also has a Display Port connection. This doesn't work from my M1 MacBook Air. I can occasionally get it to connect when not in clamshell but it is not consistent. I know the monitor and cable work from using it with other systems. The combination just doesn't work with the M1 MBA. MacOS 11.1 has done nothing to solve this.

I am not having any problems connecting to a 4K 60Hz display using this adapter:

Apple Releases USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter with HDMI 2.0 Support

Can you give me a specific test you are doing and I can let you know if the problem occurs for me? Do you just want me to be in clamshell mode and then go to Apple -> Sleep and then wake it after a period of time? Then repeat a few times?

Or specifically what is failing for you?

[Edit] So far I have put it to sleep and woke it up about 10 times with various number of minutes in between. I wrote a little shell script to print a timestamp every second in terminal so I can see that it was actually sleeping when I wake it up (gap in list). Everything looks good. I have color bars up on the screen and they look perfect every time. Anything else you want me to test? Does your Dell have an HDMI input?

I am not having any problems using scaled settings. Sleep and wake are fine.

M1 MBP linked to a 32" Samsung Q50 with a USB-C to HDMI.

After 'sleeping' for a while, it's not slow to "wake", per se, but rather slow to show an image on the screen, despite the TV being on and waiting for a signal. Was hoping 11.1 would fix that, but I guess not.

Open to suggestions.

About 3 seconds here from mouse click to showing image on 4K Sony TV. Is yours slower?

Yep, sometimes faster, but sometimes it never appears. I think my monitor has to be fully ‘on’ but searching for a signal first. I’ll try that next.

I literally just ran to Best Buy and purchased this and already tried it already. so far my observations:
1. if I plug in the 4k monitor w/ lid open, then shut to clamshell mode, it appears to work so far...
2. IF I reboot, it does not work at all and I have to unplug the whole setup and then open computer, then plug in...
3. If I plug in with it closed in clam shell mode, I still see these color issues...

looks like this is not going to be a smooth ride -- any suggestions?

I have not had problem (3). I always plug it in to the adapter when in clamshell mode, and it always seems to work fine. What does your profile look like in System Preferences -> Color ? I wonder if something is corrupt with your color profile.

Can you verify the tiny number printed on your new adapter is A2119?

BUT: I was able to reproduce the problem! For some reason it has now started to happen to me randomly. When it did I went into System Preference -> Display and I either checked or unchecked "High Dynamic Range" and the problem went away. Do you see that?

Here is what the problem looks like on my screen. It's SO WEIRD that it started happening to me because I must have tested this hundreds of times; and suddenly I'm seeing the issue out of the blue!

I am also having the exact same issue ie: Yellowish colour tint after waking my M1 MBA from display sleep and I am able to figure out when this happens. I am using Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and LG- 24UD58-B.
I got a replacement adapter from Apple but the issue still persists.

Steps to reproduce.
-Connect M1 MBA to external HDMI display using AV adapter.
-Go to Preferences > Battery > Power Adapter and enable “Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off”
-Let the “display” go to sleep.
-Waking up results in a dark yellowish tint.

Note: This issue will not happen if Macbook goes to full sleep. It only happens when you wake it from "display sleep".
