The screen on my 2023 MacBook Air M2 15-in. (A2941) is consistently failing. Whenever I start up the laptop or wake it from sleep the display goes black after a short delay of a few seconds, but the backlight on the LCD remains and it still registers input from my trackpad and keyboard, so the issue affects only the display. The issue also persisted when I entered recovery mode, and I can use the laptop as normal using an external monitor or remote desktop, so it is likely a hardware issue. The only way I have been able to use the internal display is to close the lid until the laptop goes to sleep, then open it again to use the 2-3 seconds when it does work to see what I'm doing before it goes blank again. I have to repeat this process every time I need to use the internal display.

So far I have reinstalled MacOS and opened up the laptop to reseat the display cables, and I found no evidence of corrosion or damage to the internals. None of this solved the issue, so clearly a part needs to be replaced.

My question is whether I should replace the display or the angle lid sensor. Since the display won't work no matter what angle I set it there's no way to tell if the fault is with the sensor or display cable. My AppleCare coverage has expired, so I have to get the parts myself in order to repair it. Any help on this would be appreciated.

My friend had what sounds like a very similar issue with his nearly brand new M2 MBA, but in his case the screen would sometimes randomly start working normally again for a period of time. Turned out to be a bad lid angle sensor, which Apple fixed under warranty.
