So i recently got an 11" macbook air. I also got a mini displayport to hdmi cable to hook it to my tv. It works on my 4 year old 37" lg lcd tv but not my brand new 50" samsung plasma. the macbook recognizes that its hooked up to a samsung tv as an external display but nothing is showing up on the tv. The tv recognizes that there is an hdmi device plugged in but it just says no signal. Any thoughts? Also, on my lg tv where it is working, the picture is cut off on the edges no matter what resolution i put it on. And im also not getting any sound output to the tv. The system profiler says it supports audio over hdmi/mini displayport, yet when connected to the tv there is no option to send audio to anything but the standard computer speakers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I have only hooked up my PC to our brand new TV so not sure if this applies. But everything else in your post describes my experience.
I eventually discovered that the signal has to be in the TV's native resolution first. So for the PC, I added a second display, then changed the properties of the second display to match that of the TV (I think it's 1920 x 1080). Unlike a dedicated monitor, the TV didn't just accept whatever resolution I was sending, even though I changed the resolution while the two were connected.
There was a bit more fiddling around to get it to work (unplug the HDMI cable, turn on tv, plug cable in, change TV to primary monitor, extend desktop across two monitors, etc. etc.) and I don't exactly recall what order that was in, but the key part I was missing was to have the resolution correct *before* I turned on the TV, unlike my 5 year old HDTV which showed the (distorted) desktop as soon as I plugged it in.
Let us know if you get it to work; I want to pick up one of the Apple adapter$ to connect her MBP to the TV. Of course, I have to go "hi-tech" with the extra audio cable too, since her MBP is an older 2.26 model with "video only" displayport...
