I was reading one of the posts and someone said "Silent update outside of a keynote. Next tuesday, which puts it after the WWDC keynote." (they were talking about the macbook air release) What do you guys think??

It will either happen Monday before the keynote or the following week if not at WWDC. I think it makes sense that Apple either actually releases it at the keynote or doesn't mention it but updates it the morning of or the following week.

I know Apple has said it will not be releasing any hardware at WWDC, but wouldn't it make sense to do it anyways? What I most want to see is Apple messing with everyone due to last year's iPhone 4 debacle; in regards to it being found in a bar and released on the Internet rather than by Apple. What if they are purposely misdirecting people this year and employed the assistance of a few bloggers and reporters to surprise everyone? I would love to see an iPhone 5 at WWDC, and it as well as iOS 5 are the most important factors for me. Lion should be okay, but the only idea that excites me at WWDC is iOS and possibly iCloud if it's cost affordable.

I don't believe any MBA update will bring a more complete Mac to users, so I have sorta given up and just hope that if Apple updates the MBA it figures out a way to introduce something that is all-around better than the Nvidia-based October 2010 MBA. Maybe Apple will have something magical for the MBA and report it at WWDC though, as a release there might mean something better than most expect. Although it's doubtful with the latest model just being so great that Intel's SB IGP could produce any real innovation resulting in a better all-around MBA giving all users a better experience.

If it is the exact same case, display, non-backlit keyboard, and just introduces the CPU gain with loss in GPU and Thunderbolt, most will be much better off just buying the clearance models from October 2010. The current MBA is amazing, and to see the discounts available is great. However, maybe Apple will truly surprise us with a better graphics solution, an IPS display, a backlit keyboard, double the RAM standard with 8GB available, double the Flash storage, and etc? I doubt I will buy the next MBA unless it includes several of these alternatives. I have owned every MBA version to date, and this is the first time I am not looking forward to the MBA update as it doesn't look to be an upgrade.

For me, it's most definitely going to be an upgrade from the 2010 MBA. :D

I don't play 3d games on computers, so the GPU makes little difference to me. So long as it can decode video and show OS animations smoothly, I'm happy.

I will notice a CPU upgrade because:
  • Photoshop filters and adjustments will complete faster
  • HDR photography processing will complete faster
  • Video & audio transcoding (non-GPU accelerated anyways) will complete faster
  • JavaScript animation will play back more smoothly
  • HTML page rendering will complete faster
  • Compiling programming projects will complete faster
  • Potentially, battery life will increase due to improved CPU power efficiency

Scottsdale, I sympathize that this update will likely be a big miss for you and others based on your computer usage, but for computer non-gamers this update will likely bring some significant gains. At the same time, refurbished 2010 MBA's from Apple will likely drop in price somewhat, so those looking to play 3d games can purchase a 2010 MBA at a reduced price.

Past is Present?

I have no idea whether the update will happen at WWDC, but it would be some nice symmetry if it did.

The 2010 MacBook Air redesign was first announced and released at the "Back to Mac" event last year, which also previewed OSX Lion for the first time. It would be nice if a MBA spec refresh happened next week at WWDC, where OSX Lion is also supposed to be significantly previewed (if not released shortly thereafter). At the "Back to Mac" event last fall, Apple seemed pretty content showing the next generation of their Mac-based operating system on the next generation of the MacBook (Air) -- maybe we'll get a repeat next week?

I'm so hoping for an increased SSD capacity as an option for the 13" MBA. I'm dying to get one to replace my 3 year old MBP, but need just a bit more storage.

Any speculation on the likelihood of this happening?

If the 13" comes with 4gb and a 320 ssd I'm sold! I will return my MBP I just bought for this model. If not, I will keep the MBP.

I feel like it's almost a guarantee that the 2011 MBA refresh will not be at WWDC. Apple has their hands full with Lion, iOS5, and iCloud.

The MBA refresh won't happen to at least 2 weeks after the WWDC keynote, imho, putting it at Tuesday June 21st or later.

I doubt Apple will want to have a new Hardware announcement overshadowing it's conference. I could maybe see it hitting on June 14th, but not before.

And yep, it's gonna be SB, TB and that's probably it. I really hope for a return to the BL keyboard, but we'll see what happens. Not much beyond that, IMHO.
