Hello,

I am having problems with a MacBook Air (Mid 2011 10.13.6) recognising an external display, an ASUS VP278H.

The monitor states "no signal". Nothing shows up in the Display window on the Mac. I've searched through Google and tried the commonly suggested solutions to no avail. I've tried my Nintendo Switch with the ASUS and it works fine, so I know it isn't the monitor.

Having contacted Apple support they seem to suggest it was because of the age of my Mac, and that additional leads may be required. It is currently connected via a Mini Display Port to HDMI cable. They were unable to suggest what to do other than contact ASUS. I've tried doing this but the website keeps crashing on the contact form.

Other than send the monitor back and get a different (older?) one, are there any suggestions to how I can fix this.

Thanks in advance.

Your MacBook Air Mid 2011 should be able to run the ASUS without difficulty. It's likely the problem is either with the adapter you're using or possibly a bad cable. The Mini Display Port to HDMI should work. The monitor also supports a VGA input but that's not recommended as the signal will be analog and not provide ideal results.

Thanks for the reply. I've just got hold of another lead but it produces the same results. These are the two leads I've tried:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01EQZPUG8

Is it possible both of these leads are incompatible? Is the official Apple one really any different?

I used both leads to try and plug the Mac into two TVs I have with HDMI connections, and neither are recognised.

Is there a software check to make sure my Mini Display Port is actually 'on', or being recognised by the OS?

Thanks again for any help.
