I just sold my 15" Macbook Pro 2,4 ghz so that I could buy it again when it received an update. However, when the Macbook Air came out, I asked myself, what do I use my computer for? The answer was browsing, chatting, multimedia, mail and school-work. Cant I do all that with a Macbook Air? Yes, I can. Especially since I add some goodwill cause its beautiful. Therefore I ordered a Macbook Air, 1.6/80, to use as my only computer. Since I also ordered apple tv and time capsule along with it, I don´t think I will miss my Macbook Pro.

How about you guys? Anyone planning to use the Macbook Air as youre only computer?

Well I am right where you are now. I still have my MacBook Pro 2.2 but very close to putting it up for sale. I have learned to manage my HD space well with my external drive and my music with my ipod touch. I have time capsule ordered as well. I haven't sold yet because I'm not sure what the story is with the battery in my Air. Takes forever to recharge. On phone with Apple now.

I think you can. I use my macbook right now as a primary computer. I only miss the graphics power from my desktop, otherwise, i don't need anything else.

if it suits you, go for it. I don't think you can go wrong with an Airdisc connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station, or even a time capsule which you could partition to store media on half, and then backup on another half.

i bought a MBA to replace my PB 12" and so far i haven't missed any of the features. USB only is not a problem with drives. the superdrive i used once to install, and once to burn a cd for a friend. Then i realised, if she's just going to put those docs on the computer, then trash the cd, whats the point? why not just put it on a usb stick. so i'm doing away with all cds....

The reasons I keep my desktop around is for storage, printer sharing, and for CD/DVD burning. Storing and printer sharing I could do with a Time Capsule and I guess I could do CD/DVD burning with a SuperDrive so I could feasibly make my Air my only computer. I don't see that happening though. I already have the desktop setup to do all that stuff, might as well keep it that way.

I used the optical drive once on my Macbook Pro, and that was to reinstall the OS before I sold it, so i am guessing I dont have a problem with that.

Your as in it belongs to you.
You're as in you are
Youre doesn't mean anything.

And no, personally I wouldn't use a MacBook Air as my only computer. But I like having a desktop, so I have an iMac. But one day would like an air as a 2nd Mac.

Understandable how it may work for some people. As for me, I use a 2.4GHz MBP, and under no circumstances, can a MBA take its place. The MBP is just way more useful and more functional than the MBA for me.

I could never own an MBA as being the only computer- Not for me.

The SWITCHER

yeh i am replacing my macbook because i amthe MBA1.8GHz 64 SSD .I only use my macbook for browsing the internet and itunes and iphoto and for my iphone

Only computer? Probably not for me - I prefer a larger screen, bigger hard drive, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc. Second computer? Definitely.

Well, you were basically wasting your money with the MBP anyway, so why not waste it too with the MBA?.
If all you use your computer for is what you describe in your post, you could do it with a $400 PC (even if it is running Vista). If you want to go fancy, get a regular MB and you would still be saving at least $500. Buying the MBA is just wasting your money, but I think it is a good example of the second group of people getting it (the first group being people working on the road that actually need an ultraportable).

yep.. only computer..

and i had every high end powerbook / macbook pro since the 1ghz titanium

after 6 years i realized that weight and portability > gigahertz

but everyone must decide this for his/herself

I do not do any graphics! I have moved from a DELL XPS M1210 which is being sold to a MBA. I primarily use it for light web work and email along with Word and Excel!

Great for me.

Well I know for sure that I like HD space. I've upgraded my hard drive on my Macbook pro twice (or 3 times?) to it's present copious 320GB.

So the pattern has always been: to run out of space at some point, then use an external to compensate, get sick of doing that, then breaking down and buy a larger drive from Newegg.

With the Air my options are limited.

It's the media files that do it and although you can use external usb drives, I hate having to connect a drive for this as the nature of the 'media' is pleasure not tedium.

just a thought

BTW, the Airs are very nice though.

I bought the MBP to use it to do webdesign. Now my studies takes too much time to do this, so I havent been able too. Some of us also care about design, and especially the fact that it runs OS X. I have tried Vista a couple of times, and I have to say, I was not very pleased. It got stuck all the time. Dont get me wrong, I use my laptop a lot, but most of the time, it is very light work.

Update: The fact that I have to carry it to school every day makes it perfect with its low weight.

could be the only one. you would need the external DVD drive and likely an external disk for backup, large files(movies, large photo and/or music collections)

I am in a similar situation. I have a 17" MBP, but I bought it nearly a year ago when I was doing a lot of photography & 3D modeling. These days I pretty much just use it for the web, mail, iPhoto, iTunes & iWeb. I travel quite frequently, so an ultra portable would be nice. Also, I never sit at my desk at home and am either on the floor or on my bed or in a chair with my MBP.

So needless to say I bought an MBA, but have yet to crack open the box as I had some reservations that it was an impulse buy. But after evaluating the situation, I'm leaning more and more towards keeping it as my only computer and selling off the Pro. For my needs it's all I need.

And yes, I realize I could save money by going for the Macbook, but I'm a sucker for aesthetics and good engineering. I recognize all of the effort (and money) that went into producing the MBA, and am willing to pay a premium for that.

BTW - I also ordered Time Capsule :)

Maybe unless you are like me

I use my MBA as my primary machine since I purchased it a week ago. Unfortunately I am the type of person that needs some horsepower to do things that I may only do once or twice a month. Ripping media, video editing, etc. Now I love my MBA but I have my IMac with enough horse power to do those tasks.

I guess I could just have the Air as the primary workstation but I like having something on stand bye when I need it. For most other normal computer users, I don't see why this can not be the only computer. I say sure why not.

I like the MBA, and will probably get one as soon as my MB needs replacing.

But not as my only comp. I make home movies and put them on the :apple:TV, need firewire for that.
