hey guys i have a 2011 macbook pro dual core i5 4 gig of ram and 320 gig hard drive and my dad is getting a macbook air 2011 model with 2 gig of ram and 128 gig ssd and i am thinking should i swap with him by the way both of our work is mainly on the internet so i do not need the macbook pros power and since i am a student i think the new macbook airs need help deciding
btw this is my first mac

You should try and convince him to get 4GB, not the 2GB model.

Beyond that, I think the Air is perfect for students. Much more portable than my MBP. I hate taking my 13" MBP places.

The MacBook Air seems like a great option. Though it does depend on how serious of power you need. Truthfully, I would keep the Pro. You really never know when the rare moments will come about when all the power is needed. Airs do not support a SuperDrive which is a bum for me and has less ports. Speed is not too big of an issue because it contains flash storage. If you ever want to resale your computer, you'll get top dollar for a well groomed laptop. You'll get more for your buck with the pro and the size really should not redirect your choice.

Not to rag on you, but just be careful about what your dad wants too! Some parents want the best for their kids, and will be rather selfless when it comes to things like... well... what you're talking about.

But to be honest, if I had a Pro already... I'd probably just stick with the Pro. The Air isn't anything special unless if you travel, or if you're finding the Pro to be too heavy for your day-to-day needs. I went with the Air, though, because the Pro 13-inch didn't offer any real graphics bonuses, I didn't need the excess in processing power, the display quality of the 13-inch Pro was a bit nicer but I saw past that since the 11-inch still looks nice, and I didn't need a disc drive; I also bought the Air because it's nice and light for school, and it's rather portable. However, that said: The Pro still gets the job done, and it's still quite small relative to other laptops that are out there. Just saying.

If you get upgrade-itis over the Air like this, you'll end up switching laptops around every 6 months.

lol your right i probably will be upgrading laptops every 6 monthshmm my dad wants the best for me but at my school portability plays a big role

hi thanks for your reply my dad had said that he would fit the air with 4 gig of ram 1.8 dual core i7 and 256 ssd so do you think that it is to powerful for just using the internet

There's no such thing as a "MBP dual core i5 2011" model. You are talking about the 2010 model, wish CPU is slower than the 2011 Air's CPU (even the low end Air, I believe, don't remember the exact bench scores).

pro will have more power, for the odd times you actually need it.
but I will leave my pro at home 1/3 of the time, because with the books I have to carry, it becomes a choir.

Since I got the 2010 air, it's with me almost 24/7 (not sure if that's a good thing).

actually i also use flash dreamweaver and fireworks for school so is the 2011 mba powerful enough for that because my dad is sick of getting his windows pc fixed all the time so he decided to get a macbook air but will the air be able to manage fireworks flash and dream weaver as i go to college so i need to no if the processing sacrifices the air make are worth it in college i should have given more details sorry guys my dads a mortgage broker and most of his work is on the internet for me its apps and internet so i was thinking that i should swap with him because i do need portability

Sorry, my bad! For some reason I got in my mind that you had the 15" MBP, don't know where I got that from.

The baseline 13" MBP should be equal to the fastest CPU (i7) on the Air. The Air will however feel snappier, because of the SSD.

I think you will be fine even with the low end Air (the raw CPU speed between the different models are quite small). Just make sure you add 4 GB ram, you will need that.

If you need more than 4GB ram stick to the MBP. If not, choose the Air at any time.
