I'm keen to use a new white Macbook as a DVR (seems like the best value in Apple's lineup right now - especially the $750 refurb).

I would likely use EyeTV software and a HD Homerun tuner.

My concern is having it wake from sleep to do recordings. Google has yielded little information, and it isn't all consistent. If the lid is open, then it looks like there are no issues (it functions like any desktop machine), but I don't want the lid to be open, I want it shut, and I want it to stay shut most of the time. My TV is the monitor.

So, no waking with the lid shut means I have to get a Mini (and forgo the back-to-school free iPod touch that makes the Macbook an even better value).

Is anyone using a closed Macbook as a DVR?

Thanks for the insight!

Scott

To run closed:

  • must be on a/c
  • must be connected to an external monitor (TV in this case)
  • have an available external keyboard & mouse
Wake the computer with either keyboard or mouse and you're good to go.

You can also wake it with an apple remote, this might be a good idea if you are using it as a DVR.

tells you all about it....

I guess I wasn't clear. I know how to use a Macbook with the lid closed, however, there are conflicting reports about the ability of the Mac to wake up for scheduled events while the lid is closed.

I suppose I just need to get EyeTV and the HD Homerun and give it a go with my Macbook Pro. If it works, then I'm golden, if not, I need to get the Mini.

I was hoping someone was actually using a laptop as their HTPC/DVR.

Here is an example for the Elgato forums:

So far, there appear to be two people doing what I want. It works for one, not the other. I was hoping for more than two data points.

I have to warn you that any Mac laptop that runs while closed will get VERY hot because the keyboard is used for ventilation. If possible, have your MacBook propped open slightly.

I would recommend the Mini for this job instead. It is cheaper, has more than enough power, and has a smaller footprint without overheating.

They're designed to be able to run in this mode. The vents are on the back, which are not blocked when the lid is closed. Might be a few Cs hotter, but it will be fine.
