Macbook "blacking out"

I have a recurring problem with my macbook. Seems that with no provocation the screen just goes black as if to sleep. No pre-routine to get it to happen it happens at any and all times. Will not come back up for several minutes no matter how many times spacebar, return whatever is hit. Restart doesn't fix it reinstall didn't fix it. After acting up for days all of a sudden it's good for a week and then it starts again. Hardware?.....software?.....others experience same thing?....any ideas....thanks

I have the same problem. My screen fades out of and on and it will black out and become impossible to get back up for some time and just recently it has started shutting off randomly.
