Please post your temperature running simple applications like itunes, internet browsing, and perhaps ichat or adium. If you are unsure how to get temperature, you can use

- Temperature monitor (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19994)
- Temperature monitor launcher (http://www.macfanatic.net/blog/2006/05/26/temp-monitor-launcher-v10-released/)
- Intel Core Duo temperature

Mine is at 61C right now and it remains at that temperature. There's a faint whine associated with that. It's not bad, but it's a high iddle point. Should I just take it in to be seen?

Mine idles at around 100F* (roughly). It was disconcerting at first, but then I got it up to 174F* while encoding in iTunes, and the fans kicked in. I realized that 100-120 is normal... At least I hope so.

I have a CD17 and mine stays around 50-55 during light use with fans at 2000 rpm (like the c2d) (being Word, Safari, maybe one other app). Frankly, dont believe the hype. The processor didnt defeat the heat, the case and fan RPM did.

+1

I am averaging 48C on full brightness w/ Word, PowerPoint, iChat, Safari, and iTunes open. The MBP is warm to the touch, but not HOT. I can't feel any heat in the palmrest area anymore with a mediocre workload and I've been running for 3 hours now.

I agree the new C2D chip doesn't make the computer run cooler but rather the case/fan combo.

Mine ran at 60c degrees before I got a stand with a slight slant to let air flow underneath it Then it ran at about 55c degrees, just while using the internet, etc. I still wasn't happy, so I dl'ded smc fan control and set the minimum fan speed at 2260, which brought the temp down to 49-50c, with the same load. I'm okay with that, I guess, that's about the same range as my old beige g3. Last night when I was using Photoshop CS, while I was masking it shot up to around 67c, which worried me a bit. SMC fan control showed the fan spinning at 3300 or so, and I could hear the fans and a slight whine for the first time.

I'm wondering what the maximum temp this processor is rated for, cause the high temp is making me a little nervous. I keep forgetting it's brand new, haven't had a new comp in 8 years, but I had to remind myself it's still under warranty so I shouldn't start cutting ventilation holes in it! Though about cutting the vents out just where the blower is. Maybe I should just keep an ice pack under the stand.

Ok, so I thought to try a couple things - reset the PRAM and reinstalled a clean OS X Tiger and all my programs.

No change in temperature. It's idles at 60-63 with Firefox, itunes, and Temperature monitor in the background. Here're the numbers from Temp Monitor

Temperature Sensors

1) SMART Disk TOSHIBA MK8034GSX (X6CHF3INS) (℃)
2) Enclosure Bottomside (℃)
3) CPU A Temperature Diode (℃)
4) Memory Riser Card A Position 1 (℃)

I called applecare - they said it's probably a bit high, take it in to a genius...

Went to the apple store, they searched, could not find any numbers for normal operating temperatures. The only thing they see are statements if the case is hot, however the case never really gets hot, as you can see it's running under 30C... We were just talking and another guy said the basic thing they were told to do with the CD in the past is check with the floor machines. So we installed temperature monitor on the floor machines. After doing the "yes" command in terminal we ran at like 87 on the floor models. Mine runs cooler with the yes, usually hitting around 83 max... After stopping the command both the floor model and mine dropped back to 57 and stayed there. Mine was actually running cooler at 57 as you can see, but I think it had to do with the ambient temperature which is somewhat cooler than my house right now.

So we decided it's normal operating range probably.

When I got home, I had an Antec notebook cooler waiting at the front door. Just plugged it in and been running it for the last 30 minutes or so - I see no perceivable difference in the CPU Temperature with the cooler, so I'm giving it away for christmas (the cooler I mean)... Tempearture right now as I ype this stuff is at 59-60 even though the computer feels really cool...

One sugestion the guy had at the genius bar - the Temp Monitor may not be suitable with C2D... He's argument was the activity of the fans - they do not come on at hi till like 74C. He maybe right, and even smcFanControl may be reporting wrong values. They were designed for the last generation machines. I don't know, just one sugestion. I'm just gonna forget for a while about the temperature, and hopefully, if something is to happen, it will happen within this year... Hehe...
