Well, since it's reading the drive, it may be normal.

Have you tried a cooling pad of any sort?

Does it have the latest firmware updates installed?

IIRC, the dreaded fan issue was when they mooed (turned on and then almost immediately back off).

I have exactly the same Macbook and a new Macbook C2D 2GHz. My old Macbook's fans turn on full blast whenever I play Quicktime, XVID or Flash videos. The C2D is dead silent during video playback.

So I would say: for your model, it's normal.

Hi,

Make sure you have the latest Software/Firmware updates.

I thought my MacBook was revving up for no apparent reason.

This little utility seems to work for me. http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/

Keep a note of the initial settings: base speed, lower threshold, upper threshold (note a MacBook only has one fan). If you set the base speed a bit higher (say 2700rpm) the fan is still barely audible but it seems to do a more consistent job of keeping the MacBook cool. Cooler and quieter!

Also nice to note that this freeware includes uninstall intructions too but I'm keeping it!:)
