Add me to the list of new MacBook (CD2) owners whose 1 week old mac  is cracking on the wrist area just above the infrared receiver/sleep light.

first my airport cannot reconnect to a WAP after going into deep sleep, something apple is well aware of but cannot figure out how to fix ... now this morning i see a freaking crack starting to form.

the cause of the crack ... its the screen guards. there are 2 of them at the top corners of the screen. they come into contact with the front of the wrist area, where is looks as if they are there to keep the keyboard from hitting the LCD ... nice design. *BAH*

2 large out the door ... never going to hear the end of this from my wife whose dell latitude has never given her any problems...

great time to switch.

guess i am here just to vent ...

so the support person tells me they will fix the case and send it back to me. uh ... the case broke in the first week ... i am not getting the warm fuzzies that this fix won't last just as long ... i am still in my return period (ending soon) ... should i just return this and give some other company my $$$ ?

Update 04/14/2007

Went into the apple store and had 3 things happen:
1) they ordered the replacement part (apparently the entire keyboard and top plate is replaced)
2) apple sales rep described Wifi security as bad karma(more on this later)
3) I was witness to both old man and frustrated foreigner customer support

so 1) cool all is well the tech said this should not happen with the replacement, yeah sure we'll see (hopping it does not).

wow ... 2) so basically the recommendation was to leave my home network wide open to avoid the Wifi reconnect after deep sleep issue i've been having since day 1. now my first response to this was "what an idiot", but then i started to think about it ... since the problem started i was actually using some one else's unsecured wifi when i could not reconnect to my own. who am i to say that i should not pass this on? what do i loose if i am unsecured? someone stealing my bandwidth? someone hacking into my mac, wifes laptop, my winpc or xbox 360? do i care? these are all questions that i have yet to answer but someone got me to think beyond where i have been the past 12 years regarding home networking security. a change in thinking was the very reason i switched from my winpc.

3) having worked retail computer sales at CompUSA (when the power book 165c was "it") i understand how much patience it takes to not tell the ID10T to suck it up and move on. i saw that patience today and while the Apple Genius who was trouble shooting something he wasn't even responsible for (comcast router problem and Parallels install issues) he sat there and worked through it with the customers.

So i walk away still having the problem of the cracked case, waiting for the repair people to call so i can return the MB to have its face replaced, with an understanding that what i have chosen to do will at times be frustrating and rewarding. In the end though it will be new. which for me is something that has not happened since Win NT 3.51 got the beta Win95 shell.

Update 05/02/2007

Had a message from the Apple store yesterday stating that the keyboard/mouse/palm rest assembly was back ordered with no delivery date estimates.

I originally read several posts in the apple support forums about people forgoing the repair and just using the various wrist pads. I wonder if more people are seeing this problem and requesting it fixed?

Update 05/04/2007

Got the call that the part is in, going there tonight for the fix. For anyone interested i am continuing to add to this thread to outline what i fear may become a loop concerning this crack and it's cause. if the new case cracks the same way then i think Apple has more to do than just replace it.

what do you think?

Update 05/07/2007

basically they replaced my keyboard/mouse/palm rest ... part seems the same although its 'lower' than before. basically the right side of the palm rest is flush with the outer case where the rest across to the left is mounted as it was before. we'll see ...

One week old. Go and get it replaced. There is a design flaw in it. Get it fixed before it gets out of the warentee. Even if you got apple care get it replaced quickly otherwise they may blame it on abuse.

Apple is sending me a box to ship it to them so they can fix it. should i just go to the store where i got it from and demand a replacement?

Yes otherwise it would take a while to get it back and forth. If the store wont bother with it, then you have shipping it to apple directly as an alternive so you are not stuck. What Apple would probably do is take the guts that work and put it in a new case and sell it as refurbished. What the store will so is send it back to apple and do the same...

Apple should replace it too, even if you didn't buy it from them. I hate when they treat people who don't buy directly from them as second class citizens. They should take responsibility for their design defects and just replace it, rather than forcing their customers to go through a repair process that often leads to other problems. You bought a new computer and should get that. If the store doesn't give you a new one, I would dispute the charge with your credit card company - they're often good at dealing these things. DId you buy it with a credit card?

Have you looked into alternatives for fixing this problem. I've been searching online for a fix and I think your best bet is the Wildeepz, which can be found at www.radtech.com. They look like they would work and although they recommend six on the screen, I'd say one on each side where the magnets engage should be enough to deter any cracking. Let me know what you think. :)

thanks and its interesting to see industries built upon product defects.
