Macbook choices

My Dell is up for auction on eBay and I now have enough money to buy me a $1800 MB. I can either get the base blackbook with a few accessories, but no AppleCare. What I'd like is:

2.0GHz White MB
100GB HDD
1GB RAM
Superdrive
1 year AppleCare

Sounds good, but I don't know if I should get white or black. I'll probably stick with white, but I am just wondering if I'm making a good choice.

Go with the white. With just the price difference alone you can pay for 2 GB of RAM. Or in your case the 100GB HD and 1GB RAM upgrade.
 
Dont buy a macbook

I bought two macbook recently and both of them have been randomly shutting down. I am very disappointed. Apple won't replace or reimbourse me. I understand from this thread that I am not the only one dealing with this problem.
How many are we ?
If you have this problem with your macbook, can you please send me an email at macbookproblem@mac.com with the complete serial number of your computer, model , date of purchase and outcome.
I plan on publishing weekly stats about number of computer affected and contact apple with the information.

any suggestions welcome.

go for the macbook you suggested. As long as you don't mind white, go for it. Its cheaper and you get the same computer with a different colour. Unless that is that you REALLY want a black one :p.
 
Definitely get a white Macbook... the price premiun IMO is not worth it. And for the random shut downs... i have one of the first ones and i have not experienced a single problem with it. People are criticizing thousands of macbooks on 23 of them having problems. The chances that you will recieve a defective model is very very slim. Go for it.
 
Personally, I am buying the low end Macbook as soon as it goes Merom and adding 2Gb of Ram and a bigger HDD. All computer manufacturers have problems with certain lines of products. A few months ago, there were many many posts about MBP whine/mooing and thermal paste issues. What a difference a couple of months make. If you have a problem with your Macbook it has a 1 year warranty. All you have to do is go to the Apple Store and courteously explain the problem you are having to the genius. If you can't get to an Apple store the phone reps are almost as good but sometimes it is better to be able to show someone what problem you are having in person. Apple will repair your problem at the store if possible or ship it to their service center if it is a more complex problem. I don't understand why people demand a new computer or a refund when all that your computer needs is a new part (I would guess possibly Ram or logic board in the case of the random shutdowns). Usually Apple will get your computer back in a few days unless it is a more complex problem which requires diagnosis. Finally, Apple will replace your computer if it is unrepairable or they still can't fix it after several repairs assuming it is a genuine manufacturing defect. The only inconvenience you will have is being out of a laptop for a few days or weeks. Personally, I don't think this is anything to get worked up over unless you depend on it for your business. In which case, you should get ProCare anyway.

To rap things up, how do I know this? Because I have dealt with Apple support before. My girlfriend's 17" Powerbook came back dented after we sent it in to have the speakers/soundcard looked at (they were crackling). It took me a few calls, but after being calm and explaining to them that the laptop wasn't in the same shape we sent it to them in, it now has a new bottom case and works better than ever.

Anyway i'd have to concur, there are too many problems with the MBP's and the MB's at the moment. Unfortunately for me i've had problems with both and i'm nearing the end of my patience.

I'm really hoping they can fix this, i'm hoping my repaired MB won't randomly shut down any more, i'm hoping i'll have enough faith in apple to buy maybe the new iMac but at the moment things are looking dodge.
 
I say buy the Blackbook. I know a few people with them and none of them have had problems. Problems are just something that comes along with switching processors. I'm sure in a year they will have a low number of problematic machines since they'll be used to the Intel chips by then. I'm new to Mac but did they have any problems when they started using PPC? Or maybe the was before the itnernet became popular so we wouldn't know if there was a high number of problems.
 
if you are buying you ram from apple please don't get it from a 3rd party seller, that will save some money. I would recomend Apple care with a laptop
 
I traded my PB for a white MB. I loved the performance, but the looks really disappointed me. It just looked like a toy, IMO, and it scratched REALLY easily. I ended up selling it on eBay and taking that money to buy a blackbook instead. I *love* it.

My 2 cents: The premium for color sucks, but on a purchase like this that I want to last me a few years, I want to be completely satisfied with it. If someone doesn't like the white, then it's worth paying the difference. If someone is indifferent to the color, then it's not. If I were the OP, I'd go check both of 'em out if you can, and be sure on your decision.

Also, as to Applecare - I agree that for a laptop, it's very important. However, you can buy this a year from now, if need be. I'd focus on getting your upgrades and computer set now, and wait on the warranty until you can afford it, since there's really no benefit to buying it early, anyways.

Thank god my Dell is gone. I now will be owning a BlackBook. :D :D :D

I'm a music lover, and I don't know if this choice of getting a MB is good. Heck, I don't even know where the speakers are :confused: .

Wondering: Has Apple fixed some of the problems people have complained about? I heard about a logic board replacement, but I'm not sure. And I've seen links to sites that fix the moos and whines, so someone please post that.

That's a nice choice... very similar to what's on the way to me. As for it being a good music machine... I don't think using the built in speakers on any laptop is a good idea for serious music. That being said, the MacBook is a hell of a little machine, so in terms of performance for music programs, it'll be wonderful (as long as you plug in speakers/headphones).
