Hey, a buddy of mine just got a MacBook ($1099). Seeing that I'm the one that pushed it, I feel like I should solve this if I can...

Anywho, whenever you put a CD or DVD in it, it spins a little, then ejects it. It does it with all CD's, DVD's, you name it. Even the system disks. It has done this since he got it yesterday, it never worked.

Is there anything I should try before he takes it up to the Apple Store?

Take it back. Apple will most likely deem it DOA. My first refurb Blackbook had the same problem. Well after I tried resetting NVRAM and doing the no power source hold down power button for 5 seconds thing. (All on the phone with Apple Tech).

agreed. take it to the apple store and let them fix it under warranty.

He took it back today, and even though he didn't buy it at the Apple Store (Best Buy, he had giftcards) they swapped it out right away. Just a bad disc drive, nothing he could have done.
