Whilst encoding mpeg to dvd format with ffmpegx, I checked out Activity monitor and it states that ffmpegx is using 104 to 106 percent of the cpu.

Does having dual processors (macbook 2.0) give me %200 percent operating power, by activity monitor's reckoning?

thought this was rather anomalous.

check it:

also of note: how little RAM ffmpeg is using.

It's a weird quirk with OSX. The process list displays a percentage with 100% per CPU, but the CPU tab at the bottom of the Activity Monitor shows a percentage out of 100.

As you can see, our Dual 1.8 G5 runs > 100% for weeks at a time! :D

To answer the OP's question…

Each core can go up to 100 percent usage, which translates to 200 percent usage with two cores. So essentially you're using all of one core and the other core is pretty much free to do something else.

I might get a little too excited when I see a Quad G5 or MacPro running at around 375% power....wow.
