So, about a week ago someone spilled a drink on the table next to my 4-month-old laptop. Disaster!

I moved quickly to get it away from the water and dried it off. The computer powered down and I quickly removed the battery and put the computer near a fan to dry. I left it there for about 72 hours.

When I picked up the computer I noticed what appears to be a crack in the LCD. DOUBLE DISASTER. I powered up the computer and it sounds like everything is running properly. I can hear the hard-drive and cd-drive running and the white light on the front of the macbook flashes normally. The screen, however, is frozen in a twisted mash of what looks vaguely like my desktop. It does not respond to the mouse or keys.

I know that there is very very little chance that applecare will cover this repair as its cost is particularly high. My question is: is there some way I can confirm that the computer is functioning before I have the lcd replaced?

I don't have access to a mac monitor but do have access to a pc and monitor. Is there any way to connect my macbook to the pc and access its hard-drive?

Any help or advice would be amazing.

Thanks,
Eric

The MacBook outputs Mini-DVI, so you'd have to get your hands on a Mini-DVI adapter of some sort. Apple sells the "Mini-DVI to DVI" and "Mini-DVI to VGA" adapters for $19 each, but you might be able to borrow one from someone. Your PC monitor should be either VGA or DVI, so figure out which one it is and get the corresponding adapter.

take the macbook and hand it to the person who knocked the drink over for being a clumbsy fool around electronics and make them fix it at their expense

what i'd do is take the HDD out the macbook and take it to apple store near you and ask them to hook it up to another macbook in their repair/technical area and do a backup of the hdd, before you let Apple replace it if they do as they might wipe the HDD as a standard procedure when repairing... just a thought.. juuuuuust a thought.

Unfortunately, it was my girlfriend who spilled the drink!

I thought about getting the mini-dvi to vga adapter. Perhaps I'll pick one up tomorrow and see if I can back up my hard-drive on my external.

If the hardware is damaged I'm probably going to need a new computer, right?

Also, I've looked at a few companies who you send your macbook to and they say they'll replace the LCD for $400. Anyone know how good/reliable these places are?
