Macbook doesn't recognize 10.4.9 Combo update?!

Oh boy, so here goes: I downloaded the 10.4.9 combo update from Apple for my dad's G4 Macbook. He opened the installer and left for a few hours, my mom came home and restarted the computer, and now my dad is getting nothing but a circle with a slash through it when he tries to boot up the Macbook. He's tried restarting several times and is not having any luck. He had already installed the 10.4.9 update successfully, but not the combo update, which is exactly how I did my mini. What now?

Ok, ok, so I'll put in the tiger disk and start from there... I was hoping I wouldn't end up with a useless sytem folder on his hdd. I guess the moral of this story is "don't let your folks install their own software updates!"
