MacBook drive scratching CD's?

i was reading some information (a PDF file) off a CD i burned (on another computer) and i noticed when i took the CD out it scratched the hell out of the CD. The scratches are in circles like it was scratching it while it was reading it so i'm wondering if there is something wrong with the drive...

anyone else have this problem?

This used to be an issue with MacBooks created before week 36. See the link below. Does you CD look like the one in the photo?

If I tip my MacBook gently from side to side while a CD is spinning I can hear what sounds like the CD spinning against something on the inside of the SuperDrive, but I have not noticed any damage to my CDs. Needless to say I try not to move my MacBook when I have a CD spinning inside.

I have a week 3 MacBook so it would definitely qualify. So if i take it in it should be replaced?

Can I have the drive replaced under AppleCare?

I already have quite a few issues:
Discoloration
Whine
Scratchy superdrive
Topcasing has been getting more and more loose since purchase. Poor assembly I guess.

This would require them to replace logicborad (which includes the CPU), SuperDrive and topcasing. Is it probable they will let me pay them some $ to get a brand new Santa Rosa Leopard MBP?

If I had this issue I would definitely call AppleCare and ask them to replace my SuperDrive. You should not expect your CD/DVD media to be destroyed because you are using it in your mobile MB.

I would be surprised if AppleCare does not agree to replace your SuperDrive considering this issue appears to have been addressed on the week 36 and later MacBooks.

the whine and discoloration i had fixed at a local apple store without a problem.

Allright, my warranty ends on May 23rd. I know Santa Rosa is planned for release in May, but I wouldn't expect MB(P)'s with them before June.

It's mostly Leopard I'm excitec about.

Still, is it probable they will instead let me purchase another, while taking the price of my MB from the new computer?

i would say no. the only way you could get full price is if you returned it because of defects within the 14 day period from purchase.

I was just lying in my bed when it was scratched. I may have moved a few times, but I never on purpose tilted it to scratch the disk. I don't know if I can simulate it, but I really don't want to. All I know is, this is a hardware defect by any companys standards.

I've seen posts in this forum stating that some folks have been offered a replacement MB/MBP on their fourth repair.

I too was just sitting on the couch and the drive was spinning. i just tried it on 3 HP laptops (i'm at work) that are at least 2 years old and it did not scratch the CD...

I'm not saying that you guys are mistreating your laptops or intentionally finding flaws..i'm just saying that tilting and moving any kind of spinning laptop drive (as noted in the wiki) is not smart.

Your laptop is not a portable CD player (in terms of shock protection). hard drive motion detector, anyone?

(my original post was in response to the Apple Defects wiki brought up).

Here is a hypothetical method:
Issue: Refusal to turn on.
1. Pick up your macbook/macbook pro
2. Unplug it from any power supply.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Attempt to turn the computer on.

if you can buy a $20 cd player and jog with it and not scratch your CDs i think you would be able to buy a $1400 laptop that doesn't scratch CDs when you are sitting with it using its normal functions

the problem has been looked at and has been resolved for laptops over the 36 week period. so it looks like it just requires a trip to the apple store.

I got mine this past Sunday it's probably one of the latest build models.

Its like saying " i can jog with my 200 dollar 80gb hdd based ipod, yet i cannot run with my macbook pro with a mechanical hdd? What gives?"

Well, I have a very early built Macbook and I just put in a CD and tilted it. It made some noises (obviously, cos indeed, you should not tilt it), but it did *not* scratch the CD. So I guess that test must make a little sense...

my point is the technology is there but apple decides to cut corners on stupid stuff and pay for it later... 1st gen at its finest
