Apple created Firewire, but USB is more popular, so more devices use USB, so you need more USB ports than Firewire. ...It's that simple. :)

let's be fair. Apple worked on the development that created Firewire (aka IEEE 1394), which also included Texas Instruments, Sony, IBM, and others.

the term Firewire, however, is Apple's proprietary name for the technology.

Apple was the original creator of Firewire and the largest contributor in its development, but yes, Apple did get some help from other companies. ;)
